It's a formality, isn't it?
Dinamo Tbilisi would have to score 6 tonight, if we manage just one goal, and quite frankly, despite the likelihood that we will field a relatively weak side, I am sure we will win tonight anyway. The way that Spurs' involvement in the transfer market continues to progress, we'll soon have two excellent teams we could field. Being a Spurs fan just gets better and better these days, eh?
The Georgian team didn't play at the week-end (their game was postponed), so they will be fresh, but they will only be playing for pride. I suspect that Andre Villas-Boas will want to field quite a strong defence, perhaps with Younes Kaboul again at its heart, and possibly Captain for the night. Zeki Fryers may get a start beside him ensuring that Dawson and Vertonghen are refreshed for Sunday's Derby game. Kyle Naughton had a great game last week, and can play at left or right back, which might allow a young player such as Ryan Fredericks an outing at right back. This is pure speculation on my part though. Brad Friedel should start this one, I feel.
Tom Carroll will surely start, perhaps next to Sandro. Jermain Defoe might get the nod to start, but at the end of the day, AVB is probably going to be able to keep all his key players at their best for Arsenal. It's a great situation to be in, after such a convincing win and performance last Thursday.
With little new to say about this tie, I thought it would be of interest to review some of our biggest away wins in Europe. Last week's game was our 160th official European fixture, 107 of which have been in the UEFA Cup or its successor, The Europa League.
Our one and only match in Iceland took place in September, 1971, in the first round of the UEFA Cup competition we would eventually win. We played Keflavic, and won 6-1, with goals from Mullery (2), coates, and a Gilzean hat-trick. Famously, this was the game in which a young Graeme Souness made his one and only senior appearance for Spurs, replacing Alan Mullery after 74 minutes. Souness allegedly became homesick for the North, and moved to Middlesbrough the following year, before his greatest success as a Liverpool player. We won the home leg of this tie 9-0. The goals came from Cyril Knowles, Ralph Coates, Steve Perryman, Martin Chivers (3), substitute Phil Holder, and Alan Gilzean (2).
The following year we scored 6 again away to Lyn Oslo, but they did get three in reply. We won the home leg 6-0. In September, 1973 we beat Grasshoppers Zurich 5-1 away and 4-1 at home.
In 1983, we matched the aggregate goal difference of that Keflavik result with a 14-0 aggregate win over Drogheda United, from the Republic of Ireland. The away win was 6-0. That was another good year of course, ending in that dramatic European win over Anderlecht.
The most recent European game in which we have matched last week's 5-0 scoreline was at Hearts in August 2011 ( (Hearts 0 Spurs 5 - 18.08.11). That was our biggest away win in Europe since that Drogheda match. Funnily enough, Andros Townsend featured as a substitute against "The Jam Tarts", and it is great to see him winning plaudits over the last week. Will he play tonight, or will it be Aaron Lennon?
So, it should be fairly low key tonight, but I still fancy we'll score three goals against a seriously demoralised Georgian team.
The officials will be from Italy, led by Mr. Luca Banti. We haven't seen this referee before, but he has refereed three European games and one international over the last year. On Saturday in Serie A, Mr. Banti booked five and sent off one player in the Sampdoria v Juventus game.
My match report is likely to be posted tomorrow (Friday) morning. If you are at the game, or able to watch 90 minutes, then look out for the usual invite to grade the players late tonight.
