Martinez has carried on where Moyes left off

It's tempting to ask whether Roberto Martinez has improved Everton, but in truth, their results and position are pretty much on a par with last season, when "The Toffees" were in contention for the top four for most of the time. They've certainly started this season well, and were the last Premier League team to be beaten in league competition.

It took a while for Everton to get going though, with their first three matches drawn against arguably moderate opponents - Norwich, West Brom and Cardiff.

Unlike Moyes, Martinez has been blessed with the loan services of Chelsea's 20 year old Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, who is on fire, having scored 5 goals in 5 Premier League appearances. Lukakau also scored twice in one of Belgium's recent World Cup qualifiers, when they won in Croatia. Jan vertonghen and Mousa Dembele will at least know all about Lukaku, and will no doubt be a part of the Spurs team tomorrow. Dembele may start on the bench though. Our other Belgian, Nacer Chadli had to withdraw within 10 minutes of coming on the field as substitute the other night in the League Cup game against Hull, and has a hamstring problem.

At Everton, Martinez has the benefit of being able to focus purely on Premier League games, with no European football here, and having been knocked out of the Capital One Cup at Craven Cottage in the Third Round.

Martinez's transfer business included the import of three of his Wigan players, striker Kone and defender Alacarez, both of whom are out with injuries at present. The other former Wigan man is midfielder James McCarthy, who has settled in well, with plenty of game time for Everton.

Under Martinez, 19 year old midfielder Ross Barkley has emerged in much the same way as Andros Townsend has at Spurs, with both being given International recognition by Roy Hodgson this season. With Leighton Baines in the opposition side, Spurs would be well advised not to give away their usual quote of free kicks in important positions.

At Wigan, Martinez often played a 3-4-3 system, but I think he has reverted to a more traditional modern-day style here. I like Martinez. He does not attract or court controversy, and confronts any grievances in a mature and calm manner.

The days of Spurs being a "bogey" team for Everton have passed, and they most definitely had the upper hand over us last season, when taking four points off us, that would have given us Champions League football. In December last year, we had a 1-0 lead going into added time, thanks to a Dempsey goal, when former Spur Steven Pienaar, and Jelavic scored killer goals to steal the victory. Everton would have won 2-1 at White Hart Lane too in April, had it not been for a late equaliser by Gylfi Sigurdsson. By that time, Everton's Champions League challenge had faltered with a 6 points gap beneath us.

Despite finihsing sixth last season, Everton had to miss out on Europe with two teams lower in the league winning the domestic cups. One of those was of course Martinez's Wigan.

Kyle Naughton is a doubt for Spurs, but he was hardly likely to start anyway, with our team likely to resemble that which faced Hull last Sunday. Perhaps Gylfi Sigurdsson, who scored that cracking goal on Wednesday night will start on the left in place of Aaron Lennon.

It's London v Liverpool in both cities this week-end. Whether the results enlighten us at all regarding the situation at the top remains to be seen. I wouldn't be surprised if both matches were draws, but I am sure Sky TV viewers will see two good games. I'll predict a 1-1 in our game tomorrow.

Spurs have taken their full away allocation, so for once, I'll have a good position, and we'll have a great vocal support in a passionate atmosphere. Our referee tomorrow will be Kevin Friend, who has yet to be in charge of a Spurs game this season. We last saw him in May, when we beat Stoke 2-1 at The Britannia Stadium.
