Spurs will be back in the top four this week-end!

As Chelsea play Man City tomorrow, and one or both teams must drop points, then, as long as Spurs do their job against Hull City, they will return to the top four - at least for a week!

Surprisingly, the record shows that Spurs' task will not be that easy, as we have yet to beat Hull at home in the Premier League.

There have been four meetings between the two clubs so far in the Premier League:-

25.08.2008 Spurs 0 Hull 1
23.02.2009 Hull 1 Spurs 2
19.08.2009 Hull 1 Spurs 5
16.01.2010 Spurs 0 Hull 0

Five years ago, when we also played Hull in October, Spurs were nearing the end of a historic worst ever start to a Premier League season, and also near the end of Juande Ramos's brief reign in charge. Ramos had won us a trophy in February, with a great win over Chelsea, but his guile and tactical nous deserted him for most of the games after that win.

The game counted as one of that long run of league matches that Gareth Bale played 90 minutes before featuring in a win. Bale didn't make too many appearances over the course of the 2008-09 season (12, plus 4 as sub), but it is hard to believe that he didn't score any goal for us in that season. Hull's Brazilian midfielder Geovanni scored the only goal of the game in the ninth minute to leave us with 2 points after 7 games. (That would soon turn into 8, of course!)

Hull went 9 points above us, and had had an amazing start to their Premier League season, hvaing beaten Arsenal the previous week at The Emirates. Ultimately, following Harry Redknapp's arrival and inspiration, Spurs almost made it as far as qualifying for Europe, whilst Hull escaped relegation by one point.

The next two meetings were away from home, and ended in Spurs wins. To keep the focus on home games this time around, we next entertained Hull in January 2010. Spurs were fifth, and Hull were heading for relegation in 19th place, but form took no part in the result that day, which was a goal-less draw. Welsh International goalkeeper Boaz Myhill (now at West Brom) had a fantastic day for Hull, and kept Spurs at bay. Even two years after being signed, Gareth Bale was still seeking that first league win in a game he started for Spurs, but that would come later in the month with a win over Fulham.

Hull would manage only two more wins in the remainder of the season, whilst Spurs did secure Champions League football (or at least the qualifying place) with a 1-0 win over Man City in their penultimate game.

It has taken Hull, now managed by Steve Bruce, three years to win back a place in the Premier League, and they did it by finishing second to Cardiff in last season's championship. Only Paul McShane of the 18 that featured against us in January 2010 remains at Hull, but of course they now have Tom Huddlestone, and Jake Livermore from Spurs. Livermore is ineligible under the terms of his season-long loan, but of course Tom can and most probably will play, having been one of Hull's stars this season.

Tom is still looking for that elusive goal, of course, which would enable him to at last cut his hair under the terms of a charitable venture he undertook two years ago, and there are plenty of Spurs fans who fear that he will do that against us. I personally do not see him making much headway against the likes of Sandro and Paulinho in midfield. He will, after all be playing directly against those who were his competitiors for a midfield place he rarely secured under Andre Villas-Boas.

On top of the enforced absence of Livermore, who has made seven starts for Hull, and played 90 minutes each time, Steve Bruce has unwelcome injury worries, with Loan striker Danny Graham out with a knee injury, and Slovenian International also unavailable. They do have defender Maynor Figueroa, who scored a winning goal against us for Wigan in January 2009, and one or two other familiar names.

I'll be looking forward to seeing winger George Boyd, now aged 28, who started with Stevenage in their non-league days 11 years ago, before being signed for £250,000 by Peterborough. Boyd was a very popular player and Captain at London Road, before spending the end of last season with Hull on loan, and signing for them full time this season. He has yet to make a league start, but with those injuries, perhaps he'll get a chance this game.

Apart from a Huddlestone goal, Spurs fans also fear another "post-Europa League Blues" performance, but Walker, Paulinho and Townsend were all rested mid-week, and will start tomorrow, probably with Dawson, Sigurdsson and Soldado also starting. Sigurdsson and Soldado were un-used subs in Moldova.

We face Hull twice in the next four days with the Capital One Cup game coming up on Wednesday night. We'll see two different Spurs teams in those games, and I'll take the one we see tomorrow to win convincingly - 3-0. That would put us back in the top four!

Tomorrow's referee is Michael Oliver. I do view him as one of the best referees on the list at the moment, but I hate to tell you this - he has yet to be in charge of a home league win for Spurs!

· 15 years ago this week - Spurs 2 Newcastle 0, 24th October, 1998- Iversen scores twice in George Graham's first home game in charge of Spurs.
