Can we really get going now?
After the third International break of a Premier League season which is still just 11 games old, can we now get going please?
Both Spurs and Man City will be seeking to kick on with this crucial game, being televised on SKY with a 1.30 Sunday kick-off. The form of both teams over their last 6 league games has been less than desirable, with Spurs having won just two of those six, and losing two home games to West Ham and Newcastle.
City have been devastating at home with all five games won by a total margin of 20 goals to 2. Their last home game was that 7-0 thrashing of Norwich, and they haven't scored less than three goals in a home league match, putting four past each of Man Utd and Newcastle. Currently on Betfair you can get almost 5/1 on Spurs to win and become the first team to win an away game in the Premier League at The Etihad this season.
Away from home, City have been a more ordinary side, losing no less than 4 of their 6 games, which is as many as they lost in the whole of last season.
City's last game ended in 1-0 defeat at struggling Sunderland, who have to be regarded currently as a "bogey" team for City, despite the riches invested in them in recent years. The "Black Cats" have won the last four home Premier League games against City, and haven't lost to them at home since the days when Mark Hughes was City's manager. In City's one Premier League title winning season of 2011-12, Sunderland were the only team to take points off them at The Etihad Stadium. That's quite some record for one of the favourites to go down this season.
Spurs still have a magnificent league record against City, and their 3-1 win at home in April was their 20th league win in just 32 games since the Premier League was founded. The "old" City missed five of the Premier League seasons, of course. April's win, which featured a magnificent finish by Gareth Bale, following an exquisite Huddlestone pass.
There was a time when we would consistently beat City at home and away, but we haven't won at their place now, since Peter Crouch's goal in May 2010, having been beaten on our last three visits. All three of those defeats have been close though. Last year's game was also played in November (on Remembrance Day itself), when we lost 2-1. Steven Caulker had given us a 21st minute lead, and we put up a good show, holding onto that lead till mid-way through the second half, when Aguero levelled and Dzeko scored a late winner.
Right now, Spurs would give a lot for Sunderland's recent record against City, although that does include a 5-0 defeat in April 2011, so maybe we'll just wish for their home record!
Once again, City invested in expensive players in the summer, but so have Spurs. In some ways the teams have similar problems with bedding in these new players. City are a side so full of goals, it hurts, with 12 scored in their last two games at The Etihad. After seeing off Chris Hughton's Norwich in style, they beat CSKA Moscow 5-2 to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Champions League for the first time. Spurs have one up on City in this regard, having made it all the way to the quater-finals in our one Champions League year.
Negredo scored a hat-trick against CSKA and Aguero scored two. They both chipped in against Norwich, so it's hard to see Dzeko starting, despite his powerful scoring record for club and country when he does play.
City are likely to be without key defender Vincent Kompany, who is so crucial to them, and another superstar David Silva is two weeks away with his calf injury. Spurs have this week lost Christian Eriksen on International duty, but after initial reports, it was regarded as "good news" that he will only be out for four weeks.
Eriksen's absence probably means a start for Lewis Holtby, although AVB will have other options, such as Dembele to play his favoured attacking role if Sandro plays beside Paulinho in front of the defence. Hugo Lloris will be welcomed back. Danny Rose is not yet fit, so my guess is that Vertonghen will be required at left back for this game. Vlad Chiriches is available, having played the second of Romania's play-off games, with a protective mask following his broken nose, sustained against Newcastle. So, that probably means a back four of Walker, Dawson, Chiriches and Vertonghen. Etienne Capoue, Nacer Chadli, and Zeki Fryers are also available for selection.
I do feel that the Spurs attacking four needs a shake-up to become more penetrative and hit the net a few times, but I guess we will see Townsend start on the right, with perhaps Sigurdsson on the left. As I wrote in my Newcastle report, I personally have had enough of inverted wingers for the moment, and would like to see Lennon or Lamela on the right, with Townsend given a go down the left.
Whilst Spurs do go into this game one point above City, I have to admit that I do not fancy our chances, and that I have predicted a 2-0 defeat. I very much hope to be proved wrong though!
Our referee on Sunday is not one of Spurs' favourites. It's Martin Atkinson, known to have invented goals for the opposition (Chelsea) at a crucial point in an FA Cup semi-final.
