Even the Harlem Globetrotters lost sometimes
The Harlem Globetrotters of Premier League football come to White Hart Lane tomorrow. Led by the Meadowlark Lemon of the squad, Sergio Aguero, and captained by Vincent "Curly" Kompany, Manchester City have made all before them bow this season, especially at The Etihad stadium, where they average no less than four goals per game. Spurs know all about that of course, after a humiliating 6-0 defeat in November, which played a big part in the demise of Andre Villas-Boas.
The least said about that November thrashing the better really, but of course, it all started to go wrong for Spurs after 14 seconds, when Spurs (Hugo Lloris even) gifted the rampant home side their first goal. It took another 33 minutes before the procession really started, but goal after goal came for City.
It hasn't always been so easy for City away from home and four away defeats earlier in the season (to Cardiff, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Sunderland) were the reason for City not running away at the top of the league. They are in second place now, one point behind Arsenal.
Tim Sherwood's Spurs have to focus on the positives here. The first of those is that City are the only team ahead of us in the current 6-game Premier League form guide. Another is that under Sherwood, we have at last found our scoring boots, especially in the shape of Emmanuel Adebayor, who would be only too happy to score against City, the club who took him away from Arsenal for £25 million, but when Roberto Mancini arrived, rejected him. That worked in Spurs' favour a couple of seasons ago, and will hopefully reap us some reward tomorrow.
The third positive is to reflect upon the fact that we did beat City at home last season. This was thanks to a fantastic spell of three goals in seven minutes in the last quarter of an hour, when Clint Dempsey, Jermain Defoe and Gareth Bale overhauled Nasri's early lead. Bale's goal was superbyl executed and exquisitely created by one of the finest passes I saw from Tom Huddlestone.
Nasri, a much-hated ex-gooner who delights in scoring against Spurs, is the one definite absentee for City for whom Milner, Silva and Negredo have all had knocks, but who could all be available tomorrow. For Spurs, four key players all made a return in a behind closed doors friendly last week against West Ham. Paulinho, Vertonghen, Kaboul and Sandro all got minutes. Whether any of them return tomorrow is another question. According to another report, it would seem Sandro will need another few days. The availability of Paulinho and Vertonghen could be key to whether or not Spurs manage to get a result.
City have played two Cup games since we last played, and surprisingly strong teams played against West Ham and Watford. West Ham were swatted aside in a 9-0 aggregate League Cup semi-final win, but it took an Aguero hat-trick to restore normality against Watford in the FA Cup, after the Championship side had taken a surprising 2-0 lead. Mind you, perhaps Pellegrini doesn't have a weak team!
It's a big ask, but if Spurs can get a positive result tomorrow (and I would regard a draw as a good result), then they can post a strong claim to regaining a top four spot, with the Mersey Derby tonight, and plenty of games to come between the big teams in the next few weeks.
My first priority is not to lose by the same aggregate as West Ham, or worse. I'll be honest, I've predicted defeat, but you know, even the Harlem Globetrotters lost sometimes!
