Which Newcastle will turn up tomorrow?
Spurs face a mercurial Newcastle tomorrow in a 12 noon kick-off, being shown on Sky. This game was originally scheduled to be played today, before Spurs had qualified for the Group Stage of the Euopa League.
Because of our Europa League commitments, this will be game 19 of the season for Spurs, but only Game 14 for Newcastle, who did get as far as the fourth round of the Capital One Cup, only to succumb to the strength of Manchester City.
Newcastle will arrive in good spirits, having beaten title contenders Chelsea last week 2-0. Chelsea did dominate possession and chances, but failed to convert, with Gouffran and Remy grabbing the glory for "The Toon", who in their previous game had lost to their Wearside rivals Sunderland for the second time this year. That was Sunderland's first league win of the season (former Spur Gus Poyet was in charge), and Newcastle are almost the only team Sunderland have beaten in the league this calendar year. (They did also manage to beat West Ham, Wigan and Everton in the latter part of last season)
Newcastle's up and down nature is illustrated by their Premier League record since returning from their one season back in the Championship in 2009-10. In their first season back, the "Magpies" finished 12th. The following year they finished behind us in fifth place (and above Champions League winning Chelsea), but last year they had another flirt with relegation, finishing 16th, only two points above Sunderland.
In the run-in, apart from losing 3-0 at home to Paolo Di Canio's Sunderland, Newcastle also took a 6-0 thrashing off Liverpool at Anfield. Yet this season, they managed to draw 2-2 at home to Liverpool, with 22 year old defender Paul Dummett scoring a dramatic goal at The Gallowgate End in only his second Premier League appearance for the club.
Dummett was required because of injuries to the likes of Fabriccio Coloccini (likely to return tommorrow) and Steven Taylor (still two weeks away from fitness). Dummett himself is now injured.
Newcastle will have the flair of Ben Arfa, Yohan Cabaye and Loic Remy available to them, as well as the grit and determination (Yes, that's a euphemism!) of Tiote in midfield. Remy is on loan from QPR, and has clocked in with 6 league goals already, including the late second goal against Chelsea, which sealed their win.
It is not really in Alan Pardew's nature to play a defensive game, and with one or two absentees, perhaps that is understandable. Having kept a clean sheet last week against the might of Chelsea though, why shouldn't "Toon" fans be hopeful against a Spurs side which has shown little ability in front of goal in League games, despite having more shots on target than almost any other team in the league so far this season.
Which Spurs team will show up tomorrow? Will it be the one which last season managed a 2-1 win over Newcastle, thanks to two goals by Gareth Bale, or perhaps the one which the previous year thrashed them 5-0? Even Louis Saha scored twice that day! Newcastle (and Sunderland) are amongst the teams whose colours Saha wore during his 16 year career.
Hopefully, Hugo Lloris will return. His presence in the high-line defence is vital for Spurs. We all hope it will be goals galore for Spurs tomorrow, but I'd be surprised if we managed more than two goals, which is why I've plumped for a 2-0 win. We want to go into THIS International break on a high please, Spurs!
Tomorrow's referee will be Chris Foy (not Hoy), who has yet to take charge of a Spurs game this season. Mr. Foy was in charge for both our games against Manchester United last season. We'll be wishing United well of course against Arsenal in tomorrow's late afternoon kick-off!
· On this date in 1998 (10th November), Spurs beat Liverpool at Anfield in the Worthington Cup
