It could be Defoe's big day!
All being well, Jermain Defoe should pass Martin Chivers' 39 year old record for the greatest number of goals by a Spurs player in Europe. Chivers' goals were achieved in the space of 3 seasons in 32 appearances. Jermain has matched the magic total of 22 goals in Europe with a similar number of appearances (34), but he has taken part in 6 European campaigns for Tottenham. Defoe has had the handicap of not always being first choice during his time at Spurs though.
On the whole, those years when Chivers played in our European teams were very prolific for him. In his Spurs career he made a total of 355 starts (+ 12 as substitute) and scored 174 goals in all official competitions. He was at his most prolific for Spurs, and for England between 1971-72 and 1972-73. Chivers was a big powerful striker, who genuinely struck fear into opponents, when on form.
In his excellent book Tottenham Hotspur - The Complete Record, author Bob Goodwin describes a goal I had the privilege to view from behind the goal at The Paxton End, when "Big Chiv" curled a 30 yarder from out towards the touchline past the one and only Gordon Banks. Bob Goodwin describes that goal as a turning point, after Chivers had been looking for his best form after a nasty knee injury, and a goal which set him on the path to all that he achieved thereafter.
Chivers scored both our goals in the League Cup Final win over Aston Villa in 1972, and also both goals in our UEFA Cup Final (first leg) against Wolves in 1972. He scored some great goals for England too, but like most of his team-mates (Allan Clarke excepted), couldn't find a way past the Polish goalkeeper Tomaszewski in that famous match at Wembley in October, 1973. That was Chivers' last England appearance too.
Chivers' first European goals for Spurs came in the 9-0 home win against Keflavik in September, 1971, when he got a hat-trick. His last goal in Europe for Spurs came in April, 1974 in the UEFA Cup semi-final, and he also played his last European game for Spurs in another infamous match, when we lost 2-0 in Rotterdam to Feyenoord in 1974. I was lucky enough to be seated in a section away from all the trouble that so upset manager Bill Nicholson.
Jermain Defoe's first European game for Spurs was in September 2006, when we beat Slavia Prague 1-0. The goal was scored by Jermaine Jenas, and was our first away goal in Europe for over 15 years! I took an "epic" journey by coach for that game!
Jermain Defoe's next European game for Spurs was in December against Dinamo Bucuresti, when he scored two of our three goals in a 3-1 win. Defoe was in sparkling form, and Spurs had won all four of their Group games. At that time, the UEFA Group consisted of five teams, and you met each team once only at home, or away.
Defoe's Spurs career was interrupted of course by his time at Portsmouth, and his Euro goals record has been boosted by his six so far this season, and a hat-trick last season at home to Maribor.
We turn the corner in this year's Europa League Group stage, and if we maintain current form, will confirm qualification for the next phase with a win. We could also be confirmed as group winners, depending on what happens in Tromso.
Sheriff have won both of their games played since our 2-0 win two weeks ago. They scored three goals on both occasions, with their Brazilians to the fore in the first win. I wouldn't expect the Moldovan team to play any differently to how they did against us in the home leg, so Spurs will know they will face a team with plenty of speed and will to attack.
Spurs have announced that Sandro, Chadli, Rose and Fryers are all unavailable. Chadli is in training, but not likely to be available before the Man City game on November 24th. I'd be surprised if Hugo Lloris played after his collision on Sunday with Lukaku, and if Friedel does take his place, he will become the oldest player to have featured in the Europa League.
Those injuries do give Spurs a bit of a dilemma over resting key defenders, and I would have thought Vertonghen could do with a rest. A line up of Friedel; Walker, Kaboul, Chiriches and Naughton wouldn't surprise me at the back.
The officials are all from Denmark, led by referee Kenn Hansen.
I'll take Spurs to win by the same score of two weeks ago, with Defoe to get at least one of the goals, and claim his place in Spurs history.
