Stoke will be fired up

Mark Hughes' Stoke City will arrive at White Hart Lane fired up and determined to compensate for what they think were some injustices at St James' Park on Boxing Day. They had Glenn Whelan and Marc Wilson sent off, both in the first half, against Newcastle, and slumped to a 5-1 defeat.

Whelan had already been sent off for two yellow cards, the second of which Mark Hughes considered to be a very soft dismissal, before Marc Wilson got a straight red, when he fouled Remy in the box and was adjudged to have prevented a goal-scoring opportunity. Remy had his penalty saved, but scored anyway within a minute to make it 1-1 at half-time, when Stoke had taken an early lead through Oussama Assaidi.

Mark Hughes was so exasperated with referee Martin Atkinson that he threw his coat in the air, kicked a ball away, and got sent to the stands. We've had cause to be exasperated with Mr. Atkinson before, not least over a "ghost" goal in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea in April 2012.

Both Whelan and Wilson have to serve a one-match suspension, and will be missing tomorrow. Hughes has been charged with improper conduct, and is not likely to escape some sort of sanction from the FA.

In addition to the suspensions, Stoke will be missing goalkeeper Begovic who has a broken finger and will be out for up to 6 weeks.

Spurs have their own absentee through suspension. Kyle walker received a fifth league booking on Boxing Day, so has to sit this game out. Tim Sherwood is more than likely to give Ryan Fredericks a first league start, over Kyle Naughton. Fredericks was well received when he came on against Anzhi earlier this month, and is very similar to Walker in style, with great pace and attacking qualities (he played as a winger in his Academy days). Defensively, he may be a bit green.

We will welcome Paulinho back from his three match suspension, and it will be interesting to see how he fits into the 4-4-2 formation. Sherwood will surely have to sacrifice his principles at Old Trafford on New Year's Day, but that is for another day.

Tim Sherwood reported that Aaron Lennon has a chance of starting this game, whilst Dembele and Defoe are doubtful. Kaboul, Vertonghen, Sandro and Townsend will definitely be missing.

This match will bring us to the half-way stage in the Premier League season. We sit in eighth place in what is a relatively compacted top section of the table, with Southampton four points behind us going into the week-end's fixtures. Stoke were in tenth place at the start of the week-end, which actually represents a one-place deterioration over their position at the same stage last year.

We played Stoke in Game 18 last season, and that was a frustrating 0-0 draw on 22nd December. Referee Lee Mason got poor grades from Spurs fans, and at the time had what was considered the worst domestic piece of refereeing we had seen. The criticism really was about the generosity shown towards Stoke, who still had 5 yellow cards as opposed to three for Spurs.

Tomorrow's referee, Kevin Friend, was in charge of our last game against Stoke in May, when we won our 10th away Premier League game, with goals by Clint Dempsey and Emmanuel Adebayor. We last saw Mr. Friend at Goodison Park in November, where we drew 0-0.

It might surprise Spurs fans to know that we are actually one point better off after 18 games this season, than last year. The difference is that we were sixth then; the third of four teams on 30 points, and only two points behind third place. We all know that we are not currently competing on the same level as this year's top four.

It's a full two months since Spurs' last home win in the Premier League, and that was an unimpressive 1-0 against Hull. It is imperative for everybody's sake, especially that of our rookie head coach, that we do win tomorrow, if we, and he, are to go into the New Year with any hope of some sort of success in the league. I do think we will win this game, and have predicted a 3-1 scoreline.

Whatever happens, please try and put football in perspective. We have all lost friends and members of our families during 2013, some of whom have sadly passed away over this Christmas season. I wish you all a Happy, healthy, prosperous, and yes, even a trophy-laden 2014!
