Dying Swans?
Like Spurs Swansea have a Europa League Round of 32 game to look forward to in February (against Napoli), but unlike Spurs they are not challenging for a European place next season based upon League performance, but are falling towards the wrong end of the table. In thirteenth place on 21 points, The "Swans" are only four points ahead of the bottom three in a contest currently involving the bottom 11 Premier League teams.
Like Spurs, Swansea managed a brilliant 2-1 win at Old Trafford recently, but unlike Spurs, the win came in the FA Cup and not the League. Swansea's reward is an away Fourth Round tie at Birmingham, giving them a great chance of making the fifth round. They lost their league game at Old Trafford 2-0 last Saturday.
Unlike Spurs, Michael Laudrup's "Swans'" league form has been poor of late. They haven't won a league game since early December, which was 8 games ago. That was a convincing 3-0 demolition of Newcastle, who haven't exactly been mugs this season. In their last home game against Man City two goals by Wilfried Bony (both very late in each half) gave them a respectable 3-2 scoreline, but in truth Man City had been comfortable winners.
As well as both goals against Man City, Bony also scored a last minute winner at Old Trafford, but he has not been as prolific a scorer this season with Swansea, as he was last season for Vitesse in Holland. he has not been a regular starter for Swansea despite the absence through injury of last season's top scorer Michu, who also has not been so prolific this season, when available.
Swansea's indifferent league form goes back the last 13 games, in which they have won just two. Under Tim Sherwood, Spurs are unbeaten in five league games.
Both teams have a long injury list, but both teams have players who could return on Sunday. There is no solid news on Kyle Walker at present, but apart from him, Paulinho and Vertonghen could be the only two key absentees, with Townsend, Sandro, Lamela and Sigurdsson arguably being available. Kyle Walker was not mentioned in the Spurs official team news, so he too could be available. Jan Vertonghen and Younes Kaboul are reported to be back in training, so our central defensive players will have some much needed re-inforcement soon.
In the case of Swansea, who top the Physio Romm Injury list table, they will definitely be missing number one keeper Vorm, Michu, Hernandez and De Guzman. Players such as Shelvey, Tiendalli, and Dyer could return.
Our Premier League record against Swansea has been good, with no defeats in our 5 games to date and just one match drawn. We didn't meet in League competition for 28 years between 1983 and December 2011, and we have only ever lost 6 games in 31 league meetings, all of which have been away.
Last season, early goals by Jan Vertonghen and (of course) Gareth Bale gave us a two goal start which proved unassailable, despite Michu getting one back with nearly 20 minutes of the game remaining. In this season's (first) home game, Roberto Soldado repeated his Crystal Palace penalty expertise to give Spurs another 1-0 victory.
If Tim Sherwood sticks with his traditional 4-4-2 formation, he could come a cropper, with Swansea likely to flood the midfield. Sherwood has enough players returning to mix up his style and maintain his unbeaten Premier League record and extend Spurs' record of four consecutive away league wins. I'm going for a 2-1 to Spurs.
Tomorrow's referee will be goal-inventor Martin Atkinson, yet to take charge of a Spurs game this season.
· 15 years ago this week, on 16th January, 1999, Spurs faced Wimbledon for the first of five meetings in 8 games. It was, of course, a 0-0!
