Many rested, but it still won't be kids for Spurs
For Spurs fans, all eyes are on Sunday's Premier League fixture against a resurgent Manchester United who thrashed Bayer Leverkusen 5-0 on their turf last night. This is despite the fact that we have our own (second grade) European fixture tonight 200 miles inside the Arctic Circle against Tromso tonight. As anticipated, it truly is cold, with heavy snow falling, or having fallen, but the artificial pitch will be cleared for Tromso's last home game of the season.
Tromso have finished their league programme, which follows the calendar year, and they've been relegated. Remember, they only took part in this phase of the Europa League because of the banning of Turkish sides, including Besiktas, who had actually beaten Tromso at the play-off stage. Tromso also recently sacked their manager and his assistant is in charge at present (Steinar Nilsen).
All this bad news about Tromso means nothing to Tromso fans who will flock to the ground tonight. Spurs fans in the away section have to pay£60 for the privilege on top of their travel costs. This observer has not travelled. I am keeping my powder dry (and wallet closed) until after Christmas.
Spurs have rested Hugo Lloris, Paulinho, Sandro, Lennon, Defoe, Kaboul and Adebayor. Eriksen, Danny Rose and Harry Kane are listed as injured absentees. In onr or two cases, players have been rested because of a history of being injured on artificial surfaces. The Spurs team is not really going to feature "the kids" as many people would desire, but will still be strong enough to dismiss Tromso, and to ensure we qualify for the round of 32 as Group winners.
I would suggest the team is likely to be Friedel; Naughton, Chiriches, Vertonghen, Fryers; Dembele, Capoue; Townsend, Sigurdsson, Lamela; Soldado. Such a team ought to be able to repeat the 3-0 win with which we started this Group phase.
Anzhi are at home to Sheriff in tonight's other game. Tonight's referee is Mr. Yevhen Aranovskiy. All the officials are from Ukraine.
My good friend Erlend Nordmo has offered the following guide to those travelling to Tromso, or to most of us, who might be just interested to learn more about the fine hospitality being offered to visitors tonight:-
It will be a big pleasure for us Norwegian fans to welcome the Yid Army in the cold Nothern Part of Norway. Tromsų is known as the "Paris of the North", although it's North of the Arctic circle... It's a rather small city with only 70,000 inhabitants, of which 57000 live on the Island itself. The city is known for being a nice city. It will be a different experience, but expect warm hospitality and friendly people.
Tromsų is surrounded by it's fantastic nature, and hopefully those of you going, will be able to enjoy the Nothern Lights. Some may arrive early and should have a look at Lonely Planet's page for Tromsų here: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/norway/northern-norway/tromso/entertainment-nightlife
Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tromsų
The city center is on the opposite side of the Airport on the Tromsų Island. A 10 minutes drive. It's easy to find busses that leaves for the City. The airport bus (Flybuss) is leaving every 15 minutes, but there are other buses as well. It cost 40 NOK which is 4 pounds. Taxi cost around 180 NOK.
Beware of the cold weather and Cold (expensive, but good) beer! The local beer is Mack.
On the Thursday Spurs Norway will be hosting at the Rogers & Hawk pub with the doors opening at 12am local time. The address for this one is Stortorget 4. From 1pm there will be a Spurs Legend in the pub, from 4pm there will be a live band on stage and Spurs chants.. The game starts at 7pm (6pm UK time) and the stadium; Alfheim is not far away from the city itself.
After the game the party will be back on in the city with the doors closing at 0130am.
It will be quite amazing and we will have a good turnout from Norwegian fans although this is also a long travel for the most of us as well. Spurs Norway will be eager to turn on the volume for this one and make sure the English fans enjoy their stay in Norway. The home fans from Tromsų, Isberget, will be in the same building at Roger & Hawks in the 2.floor, Spurs Norway has the 3.floor.
