Home for Christmas!
It's our first true Christmas fixture at home for five years, since we drew 0-0 with Fulham on Boxing Day 2008. That was when we were recovering from "2 points after 8 games" with Harry Redknapp guiding us back into the top half, and here we are another two head coaches forward!
In most cases, judgement upon new Head Coach Tim Sherwood will be reserved for a few weeks at least, but everyone will be expecting a home win against a West Brom side struggling so much that they recently dispensed with the services of much-respected coach Steve Clarke.
Clarke gave "The Baggies" such a great start to the 2012-13 season after Roy Hodgson had taken up the England job. At the start of that season (which included a respectable 1-1 draw at White Hart lane, West Brom were in the top four, and they featured there as late as December, retaining their top half status throughout the season.
However, in the calendar year of 2013 have won just 7 of 35 league games, and only three of those have been this season. After a fourth consecutive defeat at Cardiff on 14th December, Clarke was sacked and his assistant Keith Downing has taken over as caretaker, steadying the ship with a 1-1 at home to Hull, for whom Jake Livermore scored. West Brom's equaliser came from the Czech Matej Vydra, who was such a star at Watford last season. Vydra is a Udinese player, but West Brom is his third loan club. The 21 year old has not started a league game yet this season.
In Premier League days, we have had a couple of Christmas fixtures against West Brom. Both were away. Both were played on December 28th (2005 and 2008). Both were lost 2-0. It took Redknapp till February 2009 to find consistent form. Check out the Spurs Odyssey archives if you want to find details of those games.
West Brom's best result of this season was clearly the 2-1 win at Old Trafford. On the other hand those recent defeats against Norwich and Cardiff, who are in their "mini-league" could prove expensive at the end of the season. No doubt they miss having the loan services of Lukaku this season, with Everton being the clear beneficiaries of that and two other prominent loans.
West Brom did sign former Everton striker Victor Anichebe, but he has been out since early this month, with no sign of him being available as yet, with a groin injury. The Anelka experiment does not seem to have worked, and he hasn't played since October. Top league goalscorer, with a meagre 3 to his name is Shane Long, with Stephane Sessegnon, signed from Sunderland one goal behind.
Goran Popov, who got sent off in our away game last February for spitting at Kyle Walker, has not been in favour, so we are unlikely to see any re-enactment of that confrontation.
All in all, and on current form, West Brom look an unremarkable and a hardly likely to threat us side, but I've said the same in effect about other teams (one in particular from East London) who managed to beat us.
It's too early for team news, but we know the style in which Sherwood's side will play. In defence, I suspect no-one else is available to usurp those who played on Sunday. Dembele hobbled off, and again, I hope that Sandro will be available. if not, Capoue can step in there. Adebayor and Soldado will surely start again, with any tinkering being done in midfield.
I've predicted a 2-0 win for this game, but I am hoping for something even more convincing. Three points is not likey to help us to a higher position with all those above us liiely to win their games, with the exception of Man City and Liverpool who play each other. That result could compact the top 5, who hopefully could still be joined by Spurs soon.
I wish all readers a very merry Christmas, and a happy, healthy 2014. Please note that due to the festivities, my post-match survey and report will be delayed.
The referee for this game will be Anthony Taylor, who we have only seen twice in three years. His last match for us was the 2-1 away win at Swansea in March.
