Who gets the gig tomorrow?
Which Spurs players are going to be entrusted with ensuring our passage into the Group phase of this season's Europa League?
It is not going to be a walk-over, that's for sure, and if it hadn't been for a late late show inspired by substitute Erik Lamela, Spurs might have had a need to come back from a one goal deficit.
So, with a crunch home game against last season's high flyers Liverpool on Sunday, Mauricio Pochettino has to draw the line between success tomorrow night, whilst preserving the legs of those he values most highly for the key Premier League clash.
Arguably success could be achieved without taxing the fitness of the starting line-up from the QPR game. Brad Friedel could make his first start of the season. Kyle Naughton can return at right back, with Ben Davies snapping up the left back berth.
There will be a need for some experience at centre-back, with perhaps Zeki Fryers getting a game beside either Younes Kaboul or Jan Vertonghen. I fancy Eric Dier to be given a rest after three full games, but Younes Kaboul stayed at home last week, so might start this one. The team news bulletin from Spurs indicates that Vlad Chiriches, previously linked with a move away, is fit and included in the squad.
Etienne Capoue also stayed at home last week, so might start. Depending upon possible transfer business, fans' favourite Sandro might get a game, and Paulinho still needs to regain match fitness, and form to say the least. Mousa Dembele is probably going to be one of the two in front of the defence.
It will be interesting to see whether or not Andros Townsend starts, bearing in mind his rumoured departure to Southampton. Aaron Lennon was absent on Sunday, so will surely start, as will the ever enthusiastic Lewis Holtby, who was on the bench but could be seen joining in with Emmanuel Adebayor's goal celebrations.
Harry Kane will surely start, but Roberto Soldado has to miss out with some stiffness in hiss back and neck, so maybe Pochettino's "awesome foursome" of Chadli, Eriksen, Lamela and Adebayor won't be untouched, with one or more of them required for attacking duties.
This will be our 120th match in UEFA Cup/Europa League competition, and we will be looking for our 70th win in such games. It won't be as easy as the last time we played a Cypriot team at home ( Spurs 6 Anorthosis Famagusta 1 - 20th September, 2007), which was one of the games in which the now departed Michael Dawson scored.
AEL started their league programme last week-end with an away win, in which Sielis and Bebe scored. They'll be raring to go, with no doubt plenty of London-based Cypriots in the crowd. A good Spurs crowd should urge their team to a two or three goal win, I feel. I'll go with a 3-1 home win. Note that the game is due to kick off at 7.45pm.
P.S.- Spurs have this afternoon confirmed the signing of Argentinean centre-back Federico Fazio from Sevilla. He won't be involved tomorrow, but no doubt will be introduced to the crowd, but he may get a debut on Sunday.
· 10 years ago this mid-week, Spurs drew 1-1 away to West Brom. Jermain Defoe scored the Spurs goal.
