Seeking an Easter rising
Whatever happens in Saturday's games, Spurs will start Sunday lunchtime's game in seventh place. Depending upon the results of Liverpool and Southampton (at Arsenal and Everton respectively), Spurs could be in with a chance of overtaking one or both the teams immediately above them in the league table.
Burnley will definitely start the game in the bottom three, and could possibly go down to 19th, if QPR were to win at The Hawthorns. That's a big if, but Burnley will be looking to beat Spurs and fire a shot across Sunderland's bows. A win would take Burnley above The Wearsiders, who play the Tyne-Wear derby after our game finishes.
With eight games left to play, each week's Premier League fixtures are likely to throw up opportunities and disappointments. It is up to Spurs not to disappoint their fans on the run-in, but Sean Dyche's side will be no pushovers, as they have shown in all three of our previous encounters this season.
Harry Kane gave us a 21st minute lead in the pre-Christmas home game, but Ashley Barnes soon equalised. It took a rare (but great) Lamela goal in the 35th minute to give us a lead that was never convincing against a relegation threatened team that never came to purely defend.
In our Third Round FA Cup meetings with Burnley, Sam Vokes scored a fairy-tale goal, in only his second come-back game after injury, which gave Burnley a replay at White Hart Lane. It was a game neither team wanted, with a busy schedule, and other priorities, but Burnley frightened us with two early goals, before Spurs subjected their visitors to a four goal onslaught, which at least gave us passage to the next round.
Burnley have earnt the full respect of the Premier League's top two teams in recent games. They took a point off Chelsea at Stamford Bridge (they did park the bus in that game!), and they dramatically beat Premier League challengers Manchester City 1-0 three weeks ago, thanks to a 61st minute George Boyd goal. Burnley took four points off City this season, and not many teams can say that in any recent season! Boyd, who was signed from Hull at the beginning of the season, also scored in the away draw against City. Boyd is 29 now, and has forged a successful career in football, after starting in non-league football with Stevenage some 13 years ago. He has even featured in the Scottish national side twice.
Burnley have one major absentee in former Spur Dean Marney, now 31, who has been a stalwart for the Lancashire side for five seasons now. Marney sustained a cruciate knee injury in the 2-2 draw against West Brom in February.
Top scorer Danny Ings hasn't scored since 11th February, but he is getting International recognition and played as an over-age member of the England Under 21s in their two wins over the International break.
Spurs' England boys, Kane, Townsend, Mason and Walker will return in high spirits, and it was a great scene to see all four on the pitch when Andros Townsend scored the equaliser against Italy in Turin. Ryan Mason got the assist on his debut, and some of the headlines were even deflected away from Harry Kane, who had that fairy-tale debut against Lithuania.
Spurs will have to manage without Hugo Lloris, who hasn't recovered from the knee injury sustained early in the Leicester game, courtesy of his team-mate Kyle Walker! Danny Rose is expected to be available, despite being pulled out of the England squad, and Roberto Soldado is still doubtful.
It's going to be a tough game, and a big ask for us to get a clean sheet, which we haven't managed in over two months and 11 games, but I am going for a 2-0 win for Spurs, who will therefore be the candidates for a different form of Easter rising. The Spurs Odyssey post match survey and match report will be delayed due to Easter Sunday celebrations. I hope you all have a good week-end too!
Sunday's match referee will be Martin Atkinson. The only time we've seen him this season was for our brilliant home win against Arsenal. Mr Atkinson is kept busy on the domestic, European and International stage. He hasn't been to Turf Moor yet this season, but he did referee Burnley's 2-1 win at Stoke, and their 1-1 draw at Chelsea.
· 10 years ago on April 2nd, Stephen Kelly scored his first senior goal for Spurs in a 1-1 draw at Birmingham.
