Revenge and a semi-final place, please!

The last time we met Newcastle in any cup competition was in the League Cup in September, 2008. We were defending the trophy we had won so dramatically against Chelsea at Wembley in February, but we were in the midst of the "2 points from 8 games" start to the 2008-09 season.

Newcastle were also in the bottom three, and without a manager after Kevin Keegan walked away from another job. It was prior to the appointment of Joe Kinnear. Spurs, of course recovered under Harry Redknapp's leadership, but "The Toon" were relegated at the end of that season.

As for the game, only 33,000 attended for a start, and Newcastle's goal was a consolation after Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jamie O'Hara had put Spurs 2-0 up mid-way through the second half. It was Pav's debut goal for us. Jamie O'Hara has had a chequered career over the last couple of years, falling out with Wolves, with whom he had an exorbitant Premier League contract. Jamie has now been snapped up by Blackpool, desperate to sweep upon any out of contract players worth a try. O'Hara has played 90 minutes in their last four games.

Only Aaron Lennon, who created Pavlyuchenko's goal, survives from that game, as far as eligible Spurs players are concerned. Benoit Assou-Ekotto was involved, but, of course, he is not involved in the current Spurs set-up. Both Steven Taylor, and Fabricio Coloccini did play in that game for Newcastle, and could feature tonight.

Here we are within touching distance of a League Cup semi-final. Spurs haven't had to work too hard for the privilege, beating two Championship sides at home, whilst Newcastle started in Round Two, and beat Gillingham away, before winning 3-2 at Selhurst Park, and most recently and surprisingly, 2-0 at The Etihad Stadium.

Whilst we are seeking revenge for that home league defeat in October (which preceded Newcastle's win over City), the Cup and League form of Pardew's side has recently been very good. Whilst they lost 4-1 at The Emirates on Saturday evening, don't forget that the week before, they beat Chelsea 2-1, to inflict the first defeat of the season upon Mourinho's title contenders.

Newcastle are likely to have their third choice keeper - Jak Alnwick - in the side, due to injuries to both Tim Krul and Rob Elliot. That said, Alnwick was called into action several times against Chelsea, and didn't let his side down. Alniwck is the younger brother of former Spur, Ben Alnwick, now plying his trade at Peterborough.

Amongst Ben Alnwick's very few first team appearances for Tottenham were the League Cup semi-final second leg of January 2009 at Burnley. The least said about that, the better. (We scraped through with two extra-time goals, after Burnley had clawed back a three goal deficit.)

Spurs are seeking to appear in their 14th League Cup semi-final, whilst for Newcastle, it would be only their second such appearance.

The only other time Newcastle made it to the semi-final (and the final, which they lost to Man City) was in 1976, when we were their victims over the two legs of the semi-final. It was a Newcastle side which featured high-scoring centre forward Malcolm Macdonald, and the likes of Alan Kennedy, who would continue his career at Liverpool. Terry Neill was in his last few months of a mercifully short Spurs career.

The first leg of that 1976 semi-final was played at home, and Spurs won 1-0, with John Pratt scoring our goal. Newcastle won the second leg 3-1, with goals from Gowling, Keeley and Nulty. Don McAllister scored what, for him, was a rare goal for Spurs, although he did score the solitary goal in an end off season vital promotion win in April 1978 - against his former club, Bolton!

The team news for Spurs is brief, with Kyle Naughton available, and perhaps likely to start with Kyle Walker still recovering match fitness. A strong Spurs team is likely, and Newcastle will have Steven Taylor and the impressive midfielder Sissoko available after serving suspensions on Saturday.

An early goal for the home side would be great, both to fire up the fans, and to hopefully set Spurs on the road to the semi-final. Already, we know that contenders Chelsea, and potential banana skin Sheffield await the victors in tonight's game for the semi-final draw. Sheffield United would suit me down to the ground (it's just up the road from me for the away leg), but first, of course, we have to win tonight.

Can we do it? Yes, we can! Will we do it? That's another question, but I think we might edge it this time - 2-1.

Tonight's match referee is Andre Marriner. he hasn't always been our favourite (who has!), but the last time he officiated for us, we beat Nottingham Forest 3-1.

· On December 18th, 10 years ago, Spurs beat Southampton 5-1. Jermain Defoe scored his first Spurs hat-trick. Harry Redknapp was in charge of Saints.
