We can do this!
Whatever the team selected to play in Florence tomorrow night, they have to believe they can win the tie, despite only drawing 1-1 at home. Spurs have a habit of starting and ending games brightly. They just have to get the bit in the middle right!
Mauricio Pochettino is clearly monitoring carefully the minutes being played by his squad, and in particular by those he will want to play in Sunday's Capital One Cup Final. That is likely to mean that the team will resemble more that which played Fiorentina at home, than that which played against West Ham.
Clearly, Pochettino is going to want Harry Kane to start on Sunday, and Soldado is likely to get the start tomorrow, with Kane on the bench. I am only guessing, like all of us until one hour before kick-off, but players such as Kyle Walker, Jan Vertonghen and Nabil Bentaleb might need protection for Sunday's game. Eric Dier has featured in a match preview on the official site, so perhaps we are going to see him and Fazio in tandem.
Christian Eriksen was rested for Sunday's first half, so could start this game, as should Nacer Chadli. There might be places for Paulinho and/or Stambouli.
All Spurs fans want to see their best team against Chelsea, so we all have to be prepared for a surprise selection or two. Ben Davies is surely a certain starter, but the rest of the back five is guess work, in my opinion. Vlad Chiriches at right back anybody? That would not upset me, as I do think Chiriches can do a job for us.
I still think whatever team starts could win the tie. An early goal would put the pressure on the home side, who will miss goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu, who suffered a lower back problem in the home game against Torino on Sunday. Tatarusanu will be out for at least 10 days. Last week's goalkeeper substiute, the Brazilian Neto has actually made more league starts than his colleague in any case, but he hasn't played since December 21st.
Fiorentina only drew Sunday's Serie A game, and their main striker, Babacar missed a penalty. Coach Vincenzo Montella anticipates another open game against Spurs tomorrow.
Fiorentina play-maker Borja Valero missed Sunday's game, after going off injured in the Spurs game. He suffered an ankle wound which required stitches, so must be doubtful for the return. Mohamed Salah, the Chelsea loanee scored Fiorentina's goal in the 85th minute to give them the lead, but Torino levelled two minutes later. The crowd was some 27,000, but might be significantly less for our game, judging by previous Europa League attendances.
It's going to be a tricky trip for the team, and fans alike, as the Italian Police are apparently on high alert following events last week in Rome, when Feyenoord fans made a mess of one or two Rome landmarks. Spurs fans can expect close attention, and will have to face an alcohol free City centre.
As for the game, I insist upon being positive myself. I'm hoping for that early goal, and victory by the odd goal to secure progress! My match report will not be online before Friday night, due to my travel arrangements, but I hope to get the post-match survey out asap after the game.
The referee and on field officials are all from Turkey. We haven't met referee Mr. Huseyin Gocek before, but he was in charge for Everton's away trip to Krasnodar in October, when he only booked one player - less than in any other match he has officiated in over the last year!
· On February 26th 10 years ago, we beat Fulham 2-0 at home. Robbie Keane and Fredi Kanoute were on target.
