The way we were, and it hurts.

At the time of writing (Friday), only Arsenal can mathematically prevent Chelsea from winning their fourth Premier League title. By the time we kick off at 4pm on Sunday, the matter is likely to have been resolved, provided Chelsea beat Crystal Palace at home in the 1.30pm game.

Three of those Premier League titles will have been won with "The Special One" - Jose Mourinho at the helm. All of them will have been won since the arrival of Roman Abramovich. Manchester City have already won the title twice since the involvement of Sheikh Mansour. For a club with such resources, the failure to win any trophy this season must be seen as a major failure, and Manuel Pelligrini's job must be on the line this summer.

Despite going into the week-end in second place and almost assured of a place in next season's Champions League, City have looked an almost ordinary side in recent weeks. During this time they have lost their last four away games in all competitions. They have lost three consecutive away Premier League games, and also lost to Barcelona in the last 16 of this year's Champions League. That run of away defeats is likely to end on Sunday.

Both teams have something to play for this week. City still need points to clinch Champions League, and of course they will want to secure direct access to the Group Stage by finishing in the top three. As discussed in my Premier League review this week, Spurs are involved in a three team race for fifth place, with Liverpool and Southampton our rivals for that slot, which would also grant us direct access to the Group Stage of The Europa League.

A win for Spurs in our penultimate home game, and the most difficult of our run-in would give us an incredible boost, but let's face it, a win is highly unlikely.

Why am I so pessimistic? These days we don't just get beaten by City, we get thrashed. We've won just once in our last nine games and that was two years ago, when goals in the last fifteen minutes by Clint Dempsey, Jermain Defoe and Gareth Bale clinched an exciting 3-1 win.

This season's away game was a game in which four penalties were awarded by referee Jon Moss, but only two were converted. City still won 4-1, and one of the missed penalties was by Soldado.

Last season's two games are best forgotten. AVB's Spurs got thrashed 6-0 at The Etihad, going one down within seconds after a comedy of errors, including our ace goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris.

Tim Sherwood's Spurs fared little better in the home game last January, when City again thrashed us, this time 5-1. I suppose that was an improvement.

I said we had won just once in the last 9 games against City. In the preceding 13 games, we won 12 times. That's the way we were, and it hurts. Our hoodoo over City ended the night Peter Crouch scored that dramatic winner to take us into the Champions League qualifying stages for the first (and only) time. That was May 2010. That's the way we were.

It hurts to know that in the Premier League years Spurs have been overtaken by those with massive financial resources. It hurts to be reminded that in recent years, surely because we have so rarely contended for the exalted Champions League, we have sold our best players, with Modric and Bale recent examples, who both went to Real Madrid.

It hurts to read that Manchester United might bring Bale back to the Premier League. It hurts to read that Daniel Levy will require a record fee for a goalkeeper, if Hugo Lloris is drawn to a Champions League club. It hurts to believe that next season we will be no better equipped to challenge for the elite section of the Premier League.

It hurts to be a Spurs fan. This season "That's Spursy" seems to have entered the phrase book with #spursy featuring on Twitter. It hurts to know that a side likely to be relegated (Burnley) can beat City, but also to know that we are unlikely to emulate them.

Of course, I'd be delighted to see us win on Sunday, but I've predicted a 2-1 defeat, despite City's recent downturn in form, and the knowledge that they have players such as Yaya Toure, Nasri, Clichy and club captain Vincent Kompany injured. Aguero on his own is enough to bamboozle our defence, and we may be badly exposed, bearing in mind our inability to keep clean sheets these days.

Spurs are likely to be missing both Kyle Walker and Ben Davies for the rest of the season. Hopefully Danny Rose will be fit enough to return. I'd go for the faster feet of Chiriches in the middle rather than Fazio, with Eric Dier likely to reprise his role at right back. Mauricio Pochettino might put Dier next to Vertonghen and Chiriches at right back. There is always DeAndre Yedlin wating for his full debut.

Sunday's match referee will be Andre Marriner. we haven't seen him for a League game this season, but he was in charge of our Capital One Cup wins over Nottingham Forest and Newcastle. Unfortunately, with the same assistants, Mr Marriner was in charge of last season's home defeat to Man City. The referee got low marks from Spurs fans, upset over the sending-off of Danny Rose, whose red card was subsequently rescinded on appeal. Teams like Manchester City don't need such help from referees.

· 10 years ago this week (May 1st), we beat Aston Villa 5-1. Ledley King scored one of his 10 League goals for Spurs. Did you know? Ledley was ever-present in Spurs Premier League games in the 2004-05 season.
