The aim has to be to finish above Saints!
Surely, all Spurs have to do to be absolutely sure of qualification for European football next season is to finish above Southampton! We are one point above them going into this game. A win would be a fantastic result, and a draw wouldn't be at all bad either! The trouble is either result will be difficult to achieve.
Southampton had a fantastic start to the season, reaching the top four before the end of September, and staying there week after week until December, when a run of four consecutive league defeats, and a League Cup quarter-final defeat against Nigel Clough's Sheffield United led to a temporary downturn. An excellent run over Christmas and New Year put them back as high as third place. However recent inconsistency has led to a drop to seventh place.
A top seven placing looks secure to both teams with five games left, as "The Saints" are 9 points above Swansea in eighth. If Arsenal beat Aston Villa in the FA Cup Final, both teams will qualify for The Europa League, but if Tim Sherwood completes his fairy tale start with Villa, the seventh placed team would miss out on Europe.
According to Pochettino's latest press quotes this week, that might not be such a bad thing, as a Europa League campaign expends a lot of energy, and affects a team's ability to fight for the top four. You only have to point to Manchester United's progress this season to find support for that argument.
Last week's win at Newcastle suggests that Spurs are not quite on the beach, and that they are fighting for as high a finish as possible. There is money at stake as well, you know!
Southampton finished above Spurs in three out of the five seasons before they were relegated in 2005. Last season was spent re-asserting their Premier League status under Mauricio Pochettino (they finished eighth to our sixth), and his move to Spurs will doubly ensure a hot atmosphere at St Mary's tomorrow.
Spurs have won their last two games at this stadium. Last season's win was an exciting 3-2 come-back with a certain Tim Sherwood at the helm. Sherwood had only been in charge for our League Cup defeat to West Ham, but he had re-instated Emmanuel Adebayor, who was our man of the match in Sherwood's first league game in charge, scoring two goals.
This season's home game was a tight affair, but we ran out 1-0 winners, thanks to Christian Eriksen's 40th minute goal following a move which featured Adebayor and Chadli. Harry Kane had yet to establish himself as Spurs' first choice striker and was a 90th minute substitute. After a hat-trick against Asteras Tripolis later that month, Spurs fans bayed for his selection, and Harry's first Premier League goal this season came in November, since when he just has not stopped!
We go into this game with Hugo Lloris facing a late fitness test before a possible return. Kyle Walker will be struggling to play again this season for his club, needing another four weeks to recover from his foot injury. Otherwise, Pochettino has confirmed that the whole squad is available for selection.
Southampton have had to manage without their first choice keeper Fraser Forster for over a month now, but veteran keeper Kelvin Davies has not let them down. Saints have had to do without Spurs target Jay Rodriguez all season, but they haven't got any other major injury problems.
Italian striker Graziano Pelle was something of a star earlier in the season, but has suffered something of a goal drought this year, although he found his scoring feet for his country against England, and at home agaianst Hull two weeks ago. Sengal's Sadio Mane missed a sitter against Spurs in October, and may relish the chance to exact revenge if selected tomorrow.
Southampton's forte has been defence this season, and they have conceded just 24 Premier League goals so far this season, compared to Spurs' 47. Club captain Fonte has had plenty to do with their fine defensive record. Another former Spurs target, Morgan Schneiderlin has been a Southampton stalwart, and scored last week at The Britannia Stadium. Right back Nathan Clyne has deservedly won full International experience with England this year.
There is no question this is going to be a tough game for Spurs, and for Pochettino. I think the best we can realistically hope for is a draw. A return for Lloris, capable of extra-special saves, might just be the difference for Spurs. The game is live on BT Sport at lunch-time.
Tomorrow's match referee will be Jon Moss. Mr. Moss has been selected as this year's FA Cup Final referee, a decision which has been criticised by former referee Mark Halsey, who believes that Mark Clattenburg has been denied the opportunity for reasons known only to the FA.. Mr. Moss has been kind to us in the past, but Spurs fans were not happy with his soft awards of four penalties in our defeat at Manchester City this season. One of those was in our favour, but Soldado failed from the spot.
· - On this day 10 years ago (25th April) we played our penultimate game at Highbury, and lost 1-0.
