Tonight could be decisive
It's not as big an occasion as our famous UEFA Cup victory (on penalties) in 1984, but tonight's return match against Anderlecht could be decisive. Depending upon which table you look at, Spurs are either above the Belgians on goal difference, or below them because of the head to head factor, after we lost 2-1 two weeks ago. Whichever team wins tonight will have a massive advantage going into the final third of the Group J phase of this year's Europa League.
The great news for Spurs fans is that Heung-min Son is finally available for selection, after his injury against Manchester City on 26th September. It remains to be seen whether Son will start, or perhaps be saved for Sunday's London Derby match. Clinton N'Jie was not involved at all on Monday night and has a hamstring strain, which makes him a doubt for tonight. I fancy that Son will start on the bench and replace Harry Kane at some stage in the second half.
Danny Rose is described as doubtful, after suffering a dead leg against Villa, and although he may be fit enough to play, I fancy that Ben Davies will get the call for this game. After Kieran Trippier's problems against Anderlechts pacy substitute Frank Acheampong. Acheampong, only 22, is already a Ghanaian International, but apart from his first game of the season, he has been used only as an impact player by Anderlecht coach Besnick Hasi. There could be a chess match type situation between the coaches tonight regarding when and whether to play Acheampong, and our fastest full back Kyle Walker.
It will need to be a strong Spurs side to defeat Anderlecht, who remain unbeaten in three games since they beat us at home. They've beaten Club Brugge 3-1 and Mouson-Peruwelz 2-0 at home, and they drew 1-1 away to KV Kortirijk. Andy Najar from Honduras scored both goals on Saturday, but he was not involved in our game. Okaka scored against Bruges and Ezekiel, who was dangerous against us from the right wing, has also scored two goals in those recent games.
Anderlecht will bring a good crowd and plenty of confidence to White Hart Lane, which sadly, might not be sold out for what is a crucial game. The Belgian club currently sit second in their league, just one point behind AA gent.
One player who won't be involved tonight is Andros Townsend, who has been disciplined by Mauricio Pochettino after his public post-match spat with fitness coach Nathan Gardiner on Monday night. The Spurs routine post-match is for unused and hardly used substitutes to go through a cooling down routine, and Townsend took out his frustration in an unacceptable manner upon the club official. He has apologised, and the situation is probably redeemable, although Townsend's form has fallen badly sincce those halcyon days two years ago when he was selected for England. Andros hasn't featured for Roy Hodgson's side since last October.
I think Spurs have to win tonight, and I have to give them my full backing, hoping we reverse the 2-1 score of 22nd October. Let's hope for some entertaining footballing fireworks tonight!
Tonight's match officials are from Israel, and the referee is Mr. Orel Grinfeld. We haven't encountered this referee before, who has been in charge of a couple of Europa League matches so far this season.
