Spurs could go fifth tonight
Spurs are featuring in Sky TV's "Monday Night Football" show for the first time since April 7th 2014, when we also faced a club at the bottom of the Premier League table. Then it was Sunderland, who, under Gus Poyet's leadership, managed something of a miraculous escape. Things are not that desperate yet for Aston Villa, but they desperately need to get more points on the board, after six consecutive league defeats. We beat Sunderland 5-1 in that April 2014 game, and on form, Villa could face a similar margin of defeat.
Here we have a founding member of the Football League, and one of the truly great traditional clubs, who won the league and cup double in 1896-7, winning the league three more times before 1910. Yet they had to wait till 1981 before they won a modern day League title, although, of course they capped that with a magnificent winning run in the European Cup the following year.
Villa are also a founding member, along with Spurs, of the Premier League, and remains one of the seven ever-present teams at the elite level. Year after year in recent times, that status has been under threat, but they haven't been as low as this after 10 games. They've won one solitary league game, and that was on the opening day at Bournemouth, with a goal by Gestede, signed from Blackburn, who remains Villa's top league scorer with just three goals so far. Gestede was prolific in the Championship for Blackburn last year, but the only Premier League football he had previously played was as three-time substitute for Cardiff two years ago. Gestede hardly fits the bill as a replacement for Benteke, who was sold to Liverpool in the summer.
With Tim Sherwood at the helm in April, Villa did manage to beat Spurs after 14 failures since 2008, in a 1-0 win, and that goal did come from Benteke. (Spurs 0 Villa 1). That was a low point in a run that did give us fifth place, whilst Sherwood just about scraped Premier League survival.
We played Villa on the same date last year, when Harry Kane scored his first Premier League goal of the season. (Villa 1 Spurs 2) Harry scored with a last minute free kick. Harry will no doubt be a focus for Sky, especially after his return to form last week at Bournemouth.
Sadly, the latest Physioroom update on injuries indicates that Son and Bentaleb remain out for at least a week. That is confirmed by the club team news, provided by Mauricio Pochettino. Ryan Mason will be in the reckoning though. Spurs will be playing three games in seven days, so will hope for Son's return before the end of next week.
Villa have no significant absentees through injury. The latest information regarding Villa's managerial vacancy is that former Lyon coach (and former Arsenal player) Remi Garde will today (Monday) be announced as the new manager, with a watching brief from the stands at White Hart Lane. Villa also wanted Garde's back-room staff at his former club, but the French club are blocking the departure of Garde's support staff. Caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald has been told he will take charge of the Villa squad on tonight.
Despite my previous mention of the form of both clubs, I am predicting a moderate win for Spurs - 2-0. Following the results this week-end, including defeat at Watford for West Ham, Spurs will go fifth (on goal difference above West Ham) if they get the result they should tonight. It is all bunching up in the top half in the chase for a pote ntial vacancy in the top four, thanks to Chelsea's poor start. Spurs need to grab these three points, as "insurance" against possible disappointment next Sunday at The Emirates. On the other hand, of course, we could close that gap!
The referee for this game will be Mike Dean, who didn't get rave reviews when in charge of our draw at Swansea early in October. Mr. Dean has now been in charge of 24 of our games since January 2010, when I started keeping such records.
