No shock here surely?

Spurs have never played Colchester United in a competitive game.

We have been to Colchester's Weston Homes Community Stadium before though. We sent a full and strong squad there for a pre-season friendly in July 2013. The match was drawn 0-0, and watched by nearly 10,000 people. The record crowd at this stadium is 10,064, recorded for a League One match against Norwich in January 2010.

Our squad for that friendly included Lloris, Rose, Carroll and Kane all of whom could feature tomorrow.

We previously sent a team to Colchester's old stadium at Layer Road in July 2002, winning 3-1. 18 year old Lee Barnard scored his first senior goal for Spurs. Lee was a prolific scorer for us at junior and reserve level, and was once seen as a great hope for the first team. Lee did make three substitute appearances for us in 2006, but moved on to Southend then Southampton, where he had perhaps his best season, scoring 24 League one goals in 2010-11 in the season that "The Saints" won promotion back to The Championship. Lee is now 31 and plays for Crawley.

Also in the Spurs squad for that game in July 2002 was Johnnie Jackson. Jackson did feature more in the first team (20 league appearances - one goal), and transferred from Spurs to Colchester, where he played 115 league games, scoring 13 goals, before moving briefly to Notts County, before finally moving to Charlton. Jackson has had great success at Chalrton, and is the club captain, having played 197 league games scoring 47 goals. It's just a shame that Charlton are not doing so well.

Another former Spurs bright hope was Phil Ifil, who made a first team debut in 2004, but then faded from our view. Ifil transferred to Colchester in January 2008, but has since moved on, and seems to have disappeared from the professional scene after playing for Kettering in the Conference in 2011-12.

Another former Spurs junior who went to Colchester in recent years was Mark Yeates, who spent two seasons with "The U's" in 2007-09. Yeates got a transfer to Middlesbrough, and has been around a bit, most famously playing for Bradford last season and scoring in that club's shock 4-2 FA Cup win at Chelsea.

Speaking of FA Cup shocks, one that often seems to be overlooked these days is surely the biggest ever FA Cup success by Colchester United, and one of the biggest ever, achieved in February 1971 at Layer Road in front of 16,000 fans when Colchester beat "Mighty" Leeds 3-2. Colchester went 3-0 up too! Their team included veteran striker Ray Crawford, who scored two of their goals. Crawford had been a member of Alf Ramsey's Ipswich side which won the League Championship the year after Spurs in 1962. In their Championship year, Crawford had scored 33 league goals.

After leaving Colchester later in 1971, Crawford went to play for Durban City in South Africa, which calls to mind the Spurs Double team member Peter Baker who left us for Durban United in May 1965. Baker sadly passed away this week, aged 84, and is fondly remembered by those who knew him and had seen him play.

That Fifth Round shock win over Leeds in 1971 gave Colchester their best ever FA Cup season, but they were beaten 5-0 in the quarter-final by Everton. Colchester were a Division Four side in 1971. They were established in 1937, and elected to the Third Divisison (South) in 1950. They spent two years out of The Football League in the early nineties, but won their way all the way up to Division Two level, where they enjoyed a six year stay between 1998 and 2004. Colchester also had a couple of years in The Championship between 2006-08.

Currently, the Essex club are struggling at the wrong end of League One. The only three games they have won since October have been the three FA up games they won to reach this stage. They beat Wealdstone 6-2 away; Altrincham 3-2 at home, and lastly Johnnie Jackson's club Charlton 2-1. Colchester's goalscorers in that game were George Moncur and Marvin Sordell.

Moncur, like his father John, had some grounding at Tottenham (as a schoolboy in George's case) before moving to the West Ham academy. Sordell (24) played at Watford and was an England under-21 International before winning a big-money move to Bolton in 2012. Like Bolton, Sordell's career seems to have faded.

Colchester also have former Premier League midfielder Darren Ambrose in their squad. Ambrose played at the highest level for Newcastle and Charlton. Now 31, he is on a one year contract with "The U's". He has made 8 starts and seven substitute appearances, without any involvement in the FA Cup to date.

Colchester's manager is Kevin Keen - once a West Ham player - who will no doubt be seeking to inspire his men onto great things this Saturday.

The Spurs squad will be fully refreshed after their warm(ish) weather training in Barcelona this week. Although now depleted for a while by the injury to Jan Vertonghen (who would probably not have played tomorrow anyway), the team is likely to resemble that which beat Leicester last week, bearing in mind our Premier League match at Norwich next Tuesday. 18 year old Cameron Carter-Vickers has been training with the first team squad since they returned from Spain and could be involved tomorrow, perhaps from the bench.

Dele Alli scored at home and away last season for MK Dons against Colchester, but I'd be surprised if he started tomorrow.

Whoever plays should surely be good enough to put away the League One side, although obviously BT Sport are sniffing another shock by choosing the game for transmission at 12.45 pm tomorrow. I'll go for a 3-0 win for Spurs.

Referee Michael Oliver has been in charge of three Spurs games this season. Our home win against Crystal Palace and draws against Chelsea (H) and Everton (A).
