Make "La Viola" blue Spurs!
Spurs are in The Europa League round of 32 for the fourth successive season, and in those years only Fiorentina last year blocked our passage to the last 16. Mauricio Pochettino needs to field a strong team for both this game and Sunday's game against Swansea to pursue his ambiions in both remaining competitions available to Spurs.
We all know it is not going to be easy against a Fiorentina team which fought hard to get back on terms last week, and who maintained their own league challenge on Sunday with a 3-2 win away to Atalanta. Atalanta fell behind to goals by Fernandez and Tello, before Conti got one back. Fiorentina made it a comfortable 3-1 with an 87th minute goal by Kalinic, before Pinilla scored a 90th minute goal to make the scoreline more respectable.
In Serie A, former Real Madrid star Gonzalo Higuain is way out front with 24 goals for Napoli, but Fiorentina's Kalinic is in equal fourth place with 11 goals. Kalinic came off the bench in last week's game against Spurs. Kalinic played against us with Blackburn between 2009-11, but didn't score.
Josip Ilicic is the other main source of goals for Fiorentina, and he played just off former "Hammer" Mauro Zarate, who will be determined to score against Spurs this week, having fluffed two or three good chances last week.
The good news for Spurs is that both Hugo Lloris and Erik Lamela are available for selection. I would imagine both will play. The bad news is that Harry Kane suffered a broken nose against Crystal Palace and needs treatment. Harry is expected to play on Sunday against Swansea, and I understand he is having a special face mask made (a la Chelsea) to enable him to play. The club have now also confirmed the groin injury to Mousa Dembele, who could be absent for two weeks. It's not getting easier for Spurs with more injuries and still two games a week for the next three or four weeks, if we get past Fiorentina.
Toby Alderweireld was rested on Sunday, and will no doubt return, whilst Kevin Wimmer has not been rested since taking over from Vertonghen, and is likely to be needed both for this game and on Sunday. Trippier and Davies will return, but Tom Carroll, Clinton N'Jie and Jan Vertonghen also on the list of absentees. We can still field a strong team - perhaps Lloris; Trippier, Alderweireld, Wimmer, Davies; Dier, Mason; Lamela, Eriksen, Alli; Chadli/Son
I have to back Spurs to win this one with the advantage of a European night atmophere at The Lane in front of a near full house. It will be tough and I do think we might only win by the odd goal. 2-1 it is then!
The referee for this game and his officials are from Romania. Mr. Ovidiu Hategan has been to White Hart Lane before, as he was in charge of our 0-0 draw against Lazio in September 2012. He was rated poorly by Spurs Odyssey voters, getting a grade of only 3.5 out of 10, because of disallowed "goals" and leniency towards the Italian side, despite booking four players. Mr Hategan is a regular Champions League referee, but his card count seems quite high.
