Will Spurs grace Monaco?

Who or what does a Spurs fan think of when he or she hears the name of Monaco mentioned? The first name which comes to mind is probably Glenn Hoddle, who left us in the summer of 1987 for the Principality club when it was managed by Arsene Wenger, who was their manager between 1987 and 1995. Glenn was only there for three of those years, returning to England to Chelsea. Jurgen Klinsmann signed for Tottenham from Monaco in 1994.

Emmanuel Adebayor played for Monaco before moving to Arsenal. More recently, former Spur Dimitar Berbatov moved there from Fulham, but Berbatov is now in the twilight days of his football career and signed for PAOK this summer.

The Stade Louis II is an iconic place, despite its small capacity of 18,500. It has been used in the past for European Cup Finals, and between 1998 and 2012 the stadium hosted the European Super Cup, but that event is now rotated between various venues.

From a non-football point of view, one thinks of the famous Grand Prix, and Princess Grace, who married Monaco's Prince Rainier in 1956. Former film star Grace Kelly, died in September 1982. If you are spending enough time in the region, you might find a monument beside the road where her car crashed. Prince Albert now rules over Monaco, which has an area of less than one square mile.

Monaco has had its glory days in domestic and European football, having won the French League 7 times, the last time being in 2000. They were runners-up in the Champions League on 2004 (losing to Porto 3-0), and in the Cup-Winners' cup in 1992.

Radamel Falcao is officially a Monaco player, but of course is currently on loan at Chelsea, having spent the previois season at Man Utd. Falcao was signed for a club record £50 million from Atletico Madrid. Falcao's wages are reputed to be some 18.5 million Euros p.a. He suffered a knee injury and missed the 2014 World Cup. Falcao played in Monaco's 2014 pre-season, but made the move to Man Utd, where he had very limited success.

Spurs met Falcao in the Monaco side in an early pre-season friendly two years ago, when AVB was still in charge, and Claudio Ranieri was in charge of Monaco. Spurs lost 5-2, and Falcao scored twice. Spurs were ill-prepared with three central defenders (Vertonghen, Dawson and Kaboul) not making the trip. Gareth Bale was also absent and on the verge of his Real Madrid move, and big signings Paulinho and Soldado also did not appear. Adebayor did not make the trip for Spurs "for personal reasons". Sound familiar?

The Monaco team that day did include Ricardo Carvalho, and Joao Moutinho, who are still in their squad today. Carvalho once starred for Chelsea, before going to Real Madrid. He played for Real against us in both our Champions League games in 2011, and at the age of 37 still features prominently for club and country. Moutinho was famously an Andre Villas-Boas target for Spurs of course, but that was dreamland, and he moved from Porto to Monaco.

Monaco finished third in last season's French League, earning themselves a third qualifying round in this year's Champions League. They convincingly beat Young Boys, but lost 4-3 on aggregate to Valencia in the play-off round, leading to their arrival in Group J of The Europa League. They have yet to find top form in the French League, with 12 points from 8 games, which leaves them currently in 9th place.

Monaco have had a big shake-up of personnel this year, including the loss of 19 year old Anthony Martial to Manchester United. Monaco have Real Madrid defender Coentrao on loan, and 20 year old midfielder Mario Pasalic on loan from Chelsea. Pasalic is one of Chelsea's army of loanees. He was signed last year, but has yet to play for his owners in a competitive game.

Spurs players involved in that friendly game two years ago, who might again travel to Monaco include Hugo Lloris, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Mousa Dembele, Nacer Chadli, Andros Townsend and Harry Kane. With Sunday's game against Swansea in mind, and one or two clues offered from yesterday's training ground pictures, Spurs could arguably field a team such as Vorm; Trippier, Wimmer, Vertonghen, Rose; Dier, Carroll; Townsend, Eriksen, N'Jie; Kane, but that is my guesswork.

Spurs started their Group J campaign well with a home win, and an away draw would be a decent result here. That is not likely to be enough for Monaco, who drew in Brussels against Anderlecht. They are at home again on Sunday, so don't have any travel worries like Spurs this week. Can Spurs grace Monaco? I hope so, but I'll settle for a draw, perhaps 1-1.

My travel plans mean that website updates and reports will be delayed until Friday night, but the usual post-match survey should be available for you soon after the game.

The officials for this game are all from Portugal. Referee Artur Dias has not taken charge of a Spurs game before. He has been kept busy at home and in relatively low level European games. In 42 games over the last year at all levels, he has not failed to show a card, or several!
