Still work to do

There is still work to do for Spurs in tonight's final Europa League Group J match. By beating Qarabag two weeks ago, we did guarantee our qualification for the "Round of 32", but we do still need at least a point to ensure we qualify as Group winners, which gives us an advantageous position in the draw for the first knock-out phase. That draw takes place not tomorrow, but on Monday.

The trouble for Tottenham is that Monaco will be keen to try and win the game to stand any chance of qualification. Anderlecht are at home to Qarabag, and will be favourites to also qualify. A draw for Monaco will not be enough, as their head to head against Anderlecht is not good enough.

Having said that, Mauricio Pochettino has suggested that he will rotate tonight. Harry Kane is in the squad, but may well be rested. Harry has started all bar two of our games, and the only two when he started on the bench were at home to Qarabag and away to Anderlecht. As I suggested on Saturday, when Heung-min Son started on the bench, he was possibly being saved to start tonight, in place of Harry.

Both Nacer Chadli and Nabil Bentaleb are in the squad, but might not start. Chadli hasn't played since mid-October. Bentaleb has been absent from the Spurs team since August. With Ryan Mason and Mousa Dembele both out for this game (Dembele is sick), a suggested team has been offered in the press of Vorm; Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier, Alli; Townsend, Eriksen, Son; N'Jie.

However, Erik Lamela played a vital part in our away game against Monaco, scoring the goal we thought might have given us all three points until El Shaarawy got an 81st minute equaliser. Erik was on a roll of three successive impressive performances for the team, and was voted our man of the match in the Monaco away game. I fancy he will start. Townsend's rehabilitation has not reached the point where he will start for Pochettino, I suspect.

Monaco's form has not been great in recent weeks, when they have won just two of their last seven games. In their last two Europa League games they drew away to Qarabag, and lost 2-0 at home to Anderlecht. 19 year old Almamy Toure (from Mali) scored two of Monaco's goals in a recent 3-3 draw away to Marseilles, but did not feature in our game. Lacina Traore did play in our game and scored both goals in Monaco's league win last Saturday.

It is not going to be an easy game tonight, and Monaco have nothing to lose. Hopefully, the home crowd can cheer Tottenham to a good win to go into the knock-out phase on a high.

Tonight's referee is Ivan Bebk, from Croatia. He, and most of his team of officials were in charge of our 4-1 away defeat to Inter in March 2013. I described Mr Bebek's game as "one of the most biased and inept refereeing performances" I had seen! Let's hope it goes better tonight. Mr. Bebek is 38, and used widely on the European and International stage.
