"Mackem" 'ave it Spurs!
(Kick-off 12.45pm - BT Sport)
The term "mackem" (Mack 'em = Make them) harks back to shipbuilding days on Wearside. One of the phrases attributed to the locals in wartime was "We mack 'em, they sink 'em". The nickname was often used in a derogoratory fashion by their Tyneside neighbours, and perhaps that is one reason why Sunderland FC formally adopted the nickname "The Black Cats" several years ago now.
One cool goalscoring cat is certainly former Spur Jermain Defoe, surely likely to start against us after his hat-trick on Wenesday night at Swansea. Never mind the fact that two of the goals were probably offside, Defoe will be ready for action tomorrow. That's if selected of course, as Sam Allardyce hasn't always picked Jermain in his favoured team.
Defoe has scored 12 goals in all this season for Sunderland, 9 of which have been league goals. He got another hat-trick in the league cup against lowly Exeter back in August. Jermain Defoe's previous Premier League hat-trick had been on that momentous day in November 2009 when he scored five goals in our 9-1 thrashing of Wigan!
Spurs will be keen to bounce back to winning ways after their midweek home defeat by Leicester, and there is no better opponent to face than Sunderland. This is because we have our best points per game record in the Premier League against this opposition at over two points per game.
Co-incidentally, we also played Sunderland in game 22 last season. Spurs won 2-1, and that should have been three, because Jan Vertonghen's legitimate late goal was disallowed for offside by the officials led by referee Chris Foy. Mr. Foy retired at the end of last season, but that Sunderland game was his last in charge of Spurs. Mr. Foy is best (or should that be worst?) remembered by Spurs fans as "Foy not Hoy" when he got the lowest grade ever at Stoke in December, 2011.
We won this season's away game at The Stadium of Light 1-0. Ryan Mason scored the goal (getting injured in the process), and hasn't scored since. Unfortunately, Mason is still not ready. Mousa Dembele came off the bench against Leicester and will hopefully start tomorrow. Spurs might be otherwise unchanged, although perhaps Mauricio Pochettino will want to switch one or more of his full backs, whose pace down the flanks is a big part of the Spurs game. A lot of Spurs fans would like to see Eriksen given a rest. Perhaps Heung-min Son will get a start. He is featured on the Spurs web site, taalking about his debut at Sunderkand in September.
Sunderland are still in the bottom three, but they have gained six precious points recently with wins over relegation rivals Villa and Swansea. It's nearly 6 years and 11 games since we lost to Sunderland, and over 7 years since they managed a win at The Lane. Despite this truly being a Premier League season in which anybody can beat anybody, now is not the time for Spurs to lose - especially to this opposition.
I am predicting a 3-1 home win. "Mackem 'ave it" Spurs. In fact, sink 'em!
Tomorrow's match referee is Mike Dean, last in charge of Spurs when we beat Aston Villa 3-1 in November.
