Renewing acquaintances

Sean Dyche is in his fifth season with Burnley and already, for the second time, he has led them back to The Premier League. This is Burnley's third season as a Premier League club, but Owen Coyle was the man who led them first to hallowed ground in 2009. As usual, "The Clarets" have a fight on their hands to try and stay in The Premier League for more than one season, but their home form is keeping them away from the danger zone at this time.

All five of Burnley's wins have been at home, and they grabbed some decent scalps, with four of their victims in the top 11 clubs this week-end. Burnley beat Liverpool 2-0, Watford 2-0, Everton 2-1, but had closer games (3-2) against both Crystal Palace and Bournemouth. Away from home their solitary point was at Old Trafford, but they have scored just one goal and conceded 16 on their travels. Burnley showed resilience on Wednesday night at The London Stadium with West Ham grabbing a winner through captain Mark Noble. The fixtures computer has sent Hull to Stratford this week-end and brought Burnley to Tottenham, thus reversing these clubs' two away games this week.

Acquaintances will be renewed by players on both sides this week-end. Kieran Trippier joined us from Burnley last summer after Burnley's last relegation. Trippier was an ever-present in the Premier League that season, winning plaudits for his crossing power and accuracy, and therefore attracting Spurs'attention. Kieran hasn't had as many games as he would have liked, with no Premier League starts so far this season, but he has played European football, including The Champions League, featuring in Spurs' away win against CSKA.

Bearing in mind Mauricio Pochettino (and both clubs agreed) sought a late change to this fixture, pushing it back a day despite not being televised, I suspect the Spurs team will not change much from that which beat Hull comfortably. Trippier might have to be satisfied with a place on the bench, but he knows he can look forward to game time after Christmas with a busy two weeks which will include The FA Cup.

Burnley's squad will include two former players, one of whom is assured of a rousing reception, should he appear. Goalkeeper Paul Robinson is now 37, and had his health problems after a back injury in his latter years at Blackburn. "Robbo" moved to Burnley last year to under-study Tom Heaton, and with Heaton's recent injury our former favourite has played a couple of Premier League games - at home to Man City and at Stoke. Burnley lost both games, but it was tight at home to City, and I recall a decent save or two by the man between the sticks! Tom Heaton has returned to fitness, so "Robbo" is likely to be on the bench.

The other ex-Spur in the Burnley squad is Dean Marney. Marney will be 33 at the end of January. Dean is a product of the Spurs Academy and was given his first team debut by Glenn Hoddle in our first Premier League game of the 2003-04 season. Marney came off the bench against Birmingham at St Andrews. Sadly, things didn't go well for Glenn and he was gone after only 6 games. Dean didn't get many opportunities with Spurs, but will always remember the day he scored two goals on New Year's Day 2005 when we beat Everton 5-2. 10 years ago Dean moved to Hull where he had four seasons, but he is now in his seventh season with Burnley for whom he has started every Premier League game so far this season. Marney's one goal this season was in that 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.

Burnley have a proud history, of course. They were one of the 12 founding members of The Football League in 1888, and like Spurs were twice winners of the League Championship. They won it first in 1920-21, when we won the FA Cup, and then preceded us by winning the league title in 1959-60. Spurs finished third, just two points behind Burnley, who had taken three points off us in our fixtures that season. (Two points for a win). We used to have some famous battles with the Lancashire club, not least when retaining our FA Cup in 1962.

Other Burnley players to look out for will incude Welsh International striker Sam Vokes, who leads their league scoring list with just 4 goals; winger George Boyd who scored a nice goal last week against Bournemouth, and another of Burnley's ever-presents defender Michael Keane, who is on loan from Man Utd. Burnley's one injury concern seems to be Johann Gudmundsson, signed from Charlton, who has a hamstring injury.

Mousa Dembele might be fit for Sunday, and if he is, maybe he would play beside Wanyama, with Christian Eriksen playing further forward. It will be interesting to see if Mauricio Pochettino plays the successful 3-4-3 formation we saw on Wecdnesday night. Apart from the possible return of Dembele, I don't see a need for any other changes. I fancy Sissoko to start again, with Dele Alli maybe starting on the bench.

I am going for another 3-0 win for Spurs, which would ensure we close up on one or more teams above us, with Man City hosting Arsenal at the same time we play (4pm Sunday). Have you got any predictions regarding this game, or indeed any other match this week-end? Why not check William Hill Sign up Offers from FST?

Sunday's match referee will be Kevin Friend, who we last saw at West Brom in October. Mr Friend's last game in charge of Burnley was for their 1-0 Championship win at Preston in April. Joey Barton (heard of him?) scored the Burnley goal in his one season as a Burnley player.
