A sense of anti-climax
6 years ago on this date, Spurs drew 3-3 away to FC Twente and finished top of their Champions League group. We went on to famously beat AC Milan and reached the quarter-final stage where we met Real Madrid. There will be no such glory this year. Even if we win handsomely and if Bayer Leverkusen were to lose at home to Monaco, we cannot go through as the German Club were our superiors in our head-to-head games.
A win or draw for Spurs will mean a Europa League campaign in the New Year, but as we know, many Spurs fans treat that competition with disdain. I personally welcome the opportunity that competition will give us for a trophy and most importantly, a passage to next year's Champions League. It may be our best hope, and we should go for it. That is certainly the declared attitude of manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Our one win in Group E was in Moscow against CSKA, who will be playing their last game before a three month winter break - unless they beat us tomorrow, in which case they will have European football in February. Since losing to Monaco 3-0 on Matchday 4, the Russians are unbeaten in 6 games, drawing their home game against Bayer Leverkusen, which is more than we managed. They beat a Russian side called "Arsenal", so they deserve a cheer for that!
On Saturday, CSKA beat Ural 4-0, but remain third in their league behind both Spartak Moscow and Zenit St. Petersburg. Lacina Traore (on loan from Monaco) scored twice and Natcho also scored. Natcho (who played against us for Rubin Kazan in 2010-11, and also for Hapoel Tel Aviv in 2007) has scored three goals in his last four games.
If you are close enough to the dug-outs to see, or perhaps you are not going to the game, but watching on TV, look out for CSKA's coach Leonid Slutsky (sometimes spelt Slutski). It is not the most fortunate of names, and according to his Wikipedia page he was not the most fortunate of people. As a player, Slutsky was a goalkeeper but had to retire at the age of just 19 after falling out of a tree when trying to rescue a neighbour's cat. The former Russian International coach is a bag of nerves, and during the game can be seen rocking back and forth on the bench. He coached CSKA before, during and after his time in charge of the national team but resigned the national job after losing 3-0 to Wales in Euro 2016.
Slutsky has announced that this will be his last game in charge of CSKA, after a record 302 matches as manager. He actually replaced former Spurs boss Juande Ramos in 2009.
There was one significant piece of good team news today. Toby Alderweireld is back in the squad, and therefore fit to play. One assumes that he is going to get at least 45 minutes, and that Mauricio will use his presence to find a way of giving Victor Wanyama and/or Eric Dier some rest in advance of Sunday's game at Old Trafford. Erik Lamela is not in the squad, and has in fact flown home to Arentina because of a family issue. Lamela is still not fit to play in any case. Vincent Janssen is also out with an ankle injury, which explains his complete absence from Saturday's squad. Ben Davies is nearing fitness.
I personally anticipate a good strong team to ensure qualification for The Europa League. That is not to say that some players will not be rested for this one, with Trippier, Wimmer, Winks and Sissoko surely getting some game time. It won't be easy, but I'll take Spurs to finish their group E campaign with a flourish, and to win by two clear goals.
Match referee Nicola Rizzoli and his team are from Italy. Signor Rizzoli is a high profile UEFA referee and was in charge at four Euro 2016 games including the Germany v France semi-final. Spurs have encountered this referee twice before - firstly against Real Madrid at White Hart Lane in April 2011, and latterly last season for the home defeat by Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League.
