Will weakened Spurs have Gills' measure?
We welcome Gillingham to The Lane for this Third Round EFL (English Football League) Cup match. Gillingham are managed by former Spurs left back Justin Edinburgh. Edinburgh's assistant is another ex-Spur - David Kerslake. The "Gills" reached this stage after beating Edinburgh's first team (as a player)Southend 3-1, and then Premier League Watford 2-1 (after extra-time). Both wins were away from home.
Justin Edinburgh was born in Basildon, Essex in December 1969, and started his career at Southend, making his debut in the Football League Trophy against Brighton. Edinburgh went on to make 48(+3) Southend appearances before being signed for Spurs in 1990. He made his Spurs debut in September 1990. that was in a League Cup game against Hartlepool. He stayed at Spurs until March 2000, making a total of 246 appearances (+30), scoring just one goal in that first season in an away game against Sheffield United. Edinburgh featured in our 1999 Worthington Cup Final win against Leicester in which he was famously sent off after an incident where modern-day pundit Robbie Savage admits to dramatics to get Justin sent off. Savage is hated by Spurs fans to this day. Justin wasn't exactly loved, but he always gave 100% for his team, and wins recognition for that commitment.
After a playing spell at Portsmouth and in non-league football with Billericay, Edinburgh served his managerial apprenticeship at places such as Fisher Athletic and Grays. Justin had great success and was named Conference manager of the season for 2012-13 when he led Newport back to The Football League through a successful play-off final at Wembley. Justin was appointed to succeed another former Spur, Peter Taylor, in February 2015, and last season "The Gills" were strong contenders for promotion to The Championship until injuries took their toll. Currently, Gillingham sit 13th in the League One table.
Edinburgh's assistant manager David Kerslake had a less illustrious career with Tottenham playing 40(+4) games in the mid-nineties. Kerslake has worked as a coach with Colin Calderwood at Nottingham Forest, and also in spells at Watford and Cardiff. He was appointed as Edinburgh's deputy in July last year.
Former Spurs players Paul Konchesky and Jamie O'Hara are also in the Gillingham squad.
Paul Konchesky is now 35 years old, and made his league debut for Charlton in August 1997. He came to us on loan in September 2003, making a total of 12(+3) appearances in league and cup games. Konchesky returned to Charlton and has played against us several times for different clubs, perhaps most famously for West Ham in the March 2007 4-3 win at Upton Park, when the unfortunate Konchesky could only get the top of his head to Berbatov's 89th minute free kick which levelled the scores at 3-3. More drama was to come, courtesy of another Paul - Stalteri! Konchesky last played against us for Leicester when we beat them 2-1 on Boxing Day 2014. Last season, he was on loan at QPR, being transferred to Gillingham this summer. Konchesky has started all Gillingham's games so far this season.
Jamie O'Hara is a Kent lad, having been born at Dartford on September 25th 1986. He is therefore approaching his 30th birthday. After being snatched from the Arsenal Academy, Jamie had a successful time in the Spurs Academy, and made his first team debut at Portsmouth in December 2007 for Juande Ramos's Spurs. Jamie was disappointed not to be involved in our Carling Cup win against Chelsea. Under Harry Redknapp's management, O'Hara became less involved and spent most of the 2009-10 season on loan at Portsmouth. He couldn't play against Spurs in Portsmouth's victorious FA Cup semi-final, but did get a (losing) finalist's medal when "Pompey" were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea. The following season Jamie spent some time on loan at Wolves, before he was signed for a good fee and paid Premier League wages. Jamie's time at Wolves was scarred by a souring relationship with the fans when the club were relegated. He spent a long time at Wolves with no first team involvement, before playing at Backpool in 2014-15, and at Fulham last season. So far this season, Jamie has made just three substitute appearances, the last being on 4th September.
We have only ever met "The Gills" once in a competitive game. That was also a League Cup Third Round game, played at Gillingham's Prestfield Stadium on Tuesday 9th November, 1982. These days the stadium is known as the MEMS Prestfield Stadium. Spurs beat Gillingham 4-2 with two goals apiece from Garth Crooks and Steve Archibald. Spurs sent a strong side at a time when they were ninth in the league and had just been knocked out of the Cup-Winners' Cup by Bayern Munich. The team was Clemence; Hughton, Miller, Hazard, Lacy, Perryman, Mabbutt, Archibald, Brooke, Hoddle and Crooks. Crooks had opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Gillingham's Jeff Johnson equalised before Archibald made it 3-1 with goals just before and after half-time. Gillingham substitute Ken Price made it 3-2 before Crooks sealed the victory in the dying minutes of the game. Nearly 15,000 spectators crammed into the stadium, which these days has a capacity of 11,440.
The Gillingham side in 1982 included Micky Adams, who has since had a lengthy managerial career with clubs including Fulham, Leicester, Sheffield United, Port Vale, and lastly (and briefly) at Tranmere for seven games in the 2014-15 season.
Also in the "Gills" side that day was a certain Stephen Roger Bruce, later to play for Norwich City and title winning Manchester United. Tony Cascarino was in the early stages of his football career, having made his debut with Gillingham in February 1982 against Burnley.
Bearing in mind our recent history with the acquisition of Dele Alli from MK Dons and his meteoric rise to fame, any young player in the Gillingham squad will be seeking to gain attention and an improvement in their career.
Back in 1982, Gillingham were managed by former Charlton favourite Keith Peacock. Gillingham were a third tier side in 1982, as they are now. Spurs were of course managed by Keith Burkinshaw, who would manage Gillingham briefly between October 1988 and April 1989. Regarding Peter Taylor's times in charge at Gillingham, he was firstly there during the 1999-2000 season, then most recently between October 2013 and December 2014 before being replaced by Edinburgh.
Gillingham's top scorer this season, with five goals in league and league cup, is former Arsenal Academy player Jay Emmanuel-Thomas. His only appearances for his first club at senior level were as a substitute in three games 6 years ago. Emmanuel-Thomas is actually a QPR player, and spent some time last season on loan at MK Dons, and now with Gillingham. Emmanuel-Thomas has scored his goals in just three of "The Gills"' games.
Gillingham's recent record is not good with three defeats and a draw in their last four games. On Saturday they lost 2-1 at Port Vale.
Mauricio Pochettino is clearly going to play a much weaker side than usual. In some cases this is forced, for example by the injury to Harry Kane (now feared to be out for up to two months). Kyle Walker, Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele also suffered worrying injuries in Sunday's game. However, these are all players who would probably have been rested.
Predicting the team in these circumstances is difficult. Spurs fans would like to see Kevin Wimmer and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou have some game time. Harry Winks and Tom Carroll are among those who recently signed new contracts, and I would expect one or both of them to play. Christian Eriksen sat out Sunday's game altogether, so perhaps he will be one of the "old hands" in the starting line-up. Despite the enforced and desired absences, Pochettino has options. Perhaps we will see the following line-up:-
Vorm; Trippier, Alderweireld/Carter-Vickers, Wimmer, Davies; Wanyama, Carroll; Nkoudou, Winks, Eriksen; Janssen - but only one person really knows at the moment.
I'll back Spurs to win 3-0.
Tomorrow's match referee is David Coote. The only record I can find of him being involved in any Spurs game was when he was fourth official for an U-21 game at Old Trafford in May 2013. Over the last year Mr. Coote has refereed at Championship level and below. In his last match on Saturday (Barnsley v Reading) there were 7 yellow cards and one red!
· Reviewing Spurs' last Champions League Season - 2010-11. This was not a good day 6 years ago. we were beaten 4-1 at home by Arsenal. Harry Redknapp chose a weak side against a stronger than usual Arsenal League Cup side. Sandro made his Spurs debut, as did Steven Caulker and Stipe Pletikosa.
