The low-down on Wycombe Wanderers

Spurs have never played Wycombe Wanderers in a competitive fixture. This fourth round FA Cup draw means there are now 10 current football League sides that Spurs have yet to meet in a competitive game. They are Accrington Stanley, Barnet, Burton Albion, Crawley Town, Fleetwood, Morecambe, Rochdale, Shrewsbury, AFC Wimbledon and Yeovil.

Wycombe Wanderers were actually founded by a group of furniture makers as long ago as 1887, hence their nickname "The Chairboys". The Wanderers element of their club name is thought to have been influenced by the famous 19th Century FA Cup winning team "The Wanderers".

Wycombe Wanderers turned professional in 1974, and entered The Football League for the first time when they won the Conference in 1992-93 with Martin O'Neill at the helm in his first high profile managerial role after his successful playing career which included his greatest club successes at Nottingham Forest. Having achieved success with Wycombe, O'Neill was turning heads and it wasn't long (1995) before Norwich (who he also played for) came after him, and after a short spell in charge there O'Neill went to Leicester. The Northern Ireland International was in charge at Leicester when we beat them in the 1999 Worthington Cup Final, but led them to League Cup success the following year, having already helped them to lift the trophy in 1997.

Wycombe have had other well known managers in their football league years, such as John Gregory, Lawrie Sanchez, Tony Adams, former Spurs man John Gorman, Paul Lambert, and another Spurs man - Peter Taylor.

Wycombe's current manager is former player Gareth Ainsworth, now aged 43, who had a long playing career with a number of clubs including Preston North End, Wimbledon, QPR and finally Wycombe. He was still registered to play at the start of this season, having appeared as a substitute for five minutes in an EFL Trophy game in August.

Wycombe, who are currently in the play-off positions in League Two, are enjoying a successful season and are still in the EFL Trophy, having beaten Mansfield 2-1 away on Tuesday night to qualify for the semi-final. The club are on a lengthy unbeaten run (16 games), and were elated to be drawn away to Spurs in this round. They will come in high spirits with over 4,000 fans coming to White Hart Lane which has been sold out for this tie. Despite the fact that Wycombe will be firm underdogs, there are sure to be some good Betting Offers for this and other FA Cup games this week-end. After all, Spurs won't be fielding their first choice team, will they?

The "Chairboys" (also known as "The Blues") have reached the fourth round for only the second time in their history. They have beaten Portsmouth, Chesterfield and Stourbridge to get this far. Wycombe's season to date has numbered 27 League Two games, 6 EFL Trophy games, 3 FA Cup games and one EFL Cup game, making a total of 37 games compared to Spurs' 31 games so far. It's hard work in the lower leagues with smaller squads too. No doubt Ainsworth will field his strongest available side, whilst Spurs will be resting most of their first team side with Tuesday's trip to Wearside in mind.

Wycombe's other FA Cup fourth round appearance was in an historic season for the club when it had been in the league for less than 10 years. This was in the 2000-01 season, when as a third tier side Wycombe made it all the way to the semi-finals after beating their old manager and his team Leicester 2-1 in the quarter-final. Roy Essandoh scored a 90th minute winner at Filbert Street against Premier League side Leicester. Wycombe's fairy tale ended when they were beaten by Liverpool (only 2-1), who went on to beat Arsenal in the final that year.

Lawrie Sanchez was Wycombe's manager at that time, and he was in charge during the time when Glenn Hoddle's Spurs team played a couple of pre-season friendlies at Wycombe's Adams Park ground. Both were tight games, won by just one goal by Spurs. The first was in July 2001 (Wycombe 1 Spurs 2) and the second was two years later (Wycombe 2 Spurs 3). Incidentally, that FA Cup quarter-final hero Roy Essandoh played for and scored for Bishops Stortford against a Spurs XI also in July 2003. ( Bishops Stortford 4 Spurs XI 4). Essandoh only scored that FA Cup goal and only actually played in 15 games (7 as substitute) for Wycombe, spending virtually all of his career at non-league level.

Wycombe have spent all of their football League career in the bottom two tiers. This match has excited the whole town, and there was a clamour for more tickets than the club's 4,065 allocation (reduced due to Spurs' re-building works). Gareth Ainsworth said after Fourth Round draw:- "It's a dream tie. It looks like the draw of the round for me and it's great for the club. The reaction of my players on social media says it all - There's a fabulous spirit around the club"

Amongst the links between the two clubs are these facts:-

Gary Doherty, who was an unused substitute for Spurs in our 2001 friendly, ended his playing days at Wycombe, playing his last game in February 2014 against Chesterfield.

John Sutton, who was a Spurs junior in the early part of the this century, has spent most of his career in Scotland, and now aged 33 is still playing as a striker for St. Mirren. Sutton, who featured for Hearts against his old club in the 2011 Europa League play-off round, also spent a year on Wycombe's books between 2007-08.

34 year old striker Adebayo Akinfenwa has been in-form recently for Wycombe, having scored 6 goals in his last 9 games. Midfielder Scott Kashket (aged 21) is their top league scorer though with 8 to his name.

The official team news from Mauricio Pochettino is that Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose and Harry Kane are out for this game through injury. "Poch" remains hopeful that all three will be fit for Sunderland on Tuesday. All three would probably have been rested on Saturday anyway. Other Spurs players will surely be rested, and a line-up similar to that which beat Aston Villa 2-0 in the Third Round can be expected. Perhaps third goalie Pau Lopez will get a senior debut, but I would expect Kyle Walker, Mousa Dembele and perhaps even Victor Wanyama to be rested.

Of course, I have to go for a good win for Spurs, let's say 3-0. After some mid-winter training in Barcelona, the Spurs squad will be well prepared and focussed to ensure safe passage to the fifth round!

Match referee Roger East has not been much appreciated by Spurs fans in the four games he has officiated. He has not had charge of a Spurs game since February last year, when we beat Watford 1-0 at home. In fact, Mr. East seems to have suffered aa relagation in the refereeing world, because he has only run 5 Premier League games this season.
