Meeting the old boys
Spurs could be up against four of their former players when Hull come to town tomorrow. We are in the midst of a sequence of four Premier League games which had or have the potential to include former players. Against Swansea there were Sigurdsson, Naughton and Routledge. Against Man Utd there was Michael Carrick, and on Sunday Burnley are likely to include Dean Marney.
Tomorrow's Hull side could include former skipper Michael Dawson, and midfielders Tom Huddlestone, Jake Livermore and £13 million signing Ryan Mason. It is highly unlikely that all four will start however. Certainly they did not all start Saturday's exciting 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace, in which Hull first took the lead, then conceded two goals, before regaining the lead thanks to further goals, including one by Jake Livermore. Livermore missed the last game we played against Hull, which was our last home game of the 2014-15 season. (Spurs 2 Hull 0, 16.05.15). Livermore was under club suspension following a positive drugs test.
Spurs got a good fee (£13 million) for Ryan Mason at the start of the season, but Ryan has struggled to make his mark at his new club, which did make a good start without him, winning their first three games, one of which was in the EFL Cup. Since that good start Mike Phelan's side (Steve Bruce left in the summer after winning his side promotiomn via the Wembley Play-Off Final) has taken a nose-dive to the relegation zone where they look doomed to occupy for the season.
Mason has made 9 Premier League starts and scored just one league goal. That came in a soul-destroying 6-1 defeat at Bournemouth.
Former Spurs favourite Michael Dawson suffered knee ligament damage in the summer and didn't start his competitive season until late October. Since then "Daws" has played every minute of every game. Now 33, Michael remains as crucial a part of his team as he was for almost the entire length of his Spurs career. An almighty welcome awaits him tomorrow night. Both Michael Dawson and Tom Huddlestone played a full part in our previous Champions League season six years ago. "Thud" is also assured a fond welcome from the Spurs faithful.
There is no time for sentiment though. Spurs now have two home games where it is essential we gain a maximum 6 point return. Anything less against Hull, and (on Sunday) Burnley will severely harm our prospects of challenging the top four. We will have to do it tomorrow without Mousa Dembele, Erik Lamela, and Vincent Janssen. Dembele suffered a foot injury at Old Trafford. Erik is back now from his trip home, but still has that hip problem. Janssen is probably out till after Christmas (December 28th).
Whilst he didn't play in the game, Michael Dawson will try to encourage his team mates by reminding them of a bit of recent history when Phil Brown's side (who had made such a good start to their Premier League career) surprised us and won 1-0 at white Hart Lane in October 2008. Spurs manager Juande Ramos, despite winning a League Cup Final against Chelsea ("Daws" missed that through injury) was on borrowed time. Incidentally, Dean Marney, who we should see on Sunday for Burnley played for Hull in that 1-0 win.
Mike Phelan has plenty of injury concerns, and has been playing with a limited squad for most of the season. Absentees include the suspended Mbokani (only 3 starts anyway), striker Will Keane (ACL) and another striker Abel Hernandez. The former manager's son - Alex Bruce - hasn't played all season due to an achilles injury, but could be available soon.
Hull have only managed one League win since August, and no-one in their right mind would fancy them to get anything from this game. I certainly don't and have in fact predicted a win approaching Swansea proportions. Sorry "Daws", but I am going for a 4-0 home win!

Referee Andre Marriner's one other game in charge of us this season was for our 2-0 win over Man City. Hull saw Mr. Marriner at Anfield where they lost 5-1 in September.
