Historic night required for Spurs
We all know what a difficult task has been set (by Spurs themselves) in order to guarantee qualification for the knock-out phase of this season's Champions League tournament. 6 years ago, it can truly be said that we graced this Blue Riband European club tournament, and in fact at this stage we ensured our passage to the last 16 with a convincing 3-0 home win against Werder Bremen. This time, thanks to two "home defeats" at Wembley, we now need to win the two remaining games in Group E.
Last year we faced Monaco at home and away in the Group phase of The Europa League. We thrashed them at home in December, and had drawn the away game in October (Monaco 1 Spurs 1 - 01.10.15). Erik Lamela had scored and starred in that game. Erik's goal came in the first half, but Monaco's El Shaarawy scored and 81st minute equaliser in a half empty Stade Louis II Stadium.
This year, things are different, as Monaco have re-discovered some of their best form at home and in Europe. Monaco top Group E with two wins and two draws, and they even have an advantage over us going into this game, because they played their Ligue 1 fixture on Friday night and beat bottom side Lorient 3-0 away. That put them top of their league, but Nice played last night and won 1-0 at Saint-Etienne to go three points clear of their near rivals. Perhaps crucially in the context of their domestic season, Nice (Hugo Lloris's birthplace and first team as a professional) beat Monaco 4-0 back in September to bring an end to a run of 7 consecutive wins, which included the win at Wembley.
Monaco have won four and drawn two of their last six games. Top league goal scorer for the Principality side is Thomas Lemar (who scored one of Monaco's two winning goals at Wembley) with 5, but goals have come from various sources rather than one outstanding figure. Another factor in Monaco's resurgence is surely Radamel Falcao, who had such an un impressive time in England, but has scored 9 goals for the club in all competitions this season, four of which have come in his last three club games.
Erik Lamela's countryman Guido Carrillo has also scored four goals for Monaco, but they have come in just two scoring games. Carrillo has yet to win an International cap.
Monaco's stadium will be half-empty, but sadly, Spurs' allocation has been strictly restricted to less than 1,000 lucky supporters. Those fans are going to have to make a lot of noise and need to inspire their team to become "History Boys" on the night. With Monaco travelling to Bayer Leverkusen for the closing game, a win here and against CSKA at Wembley would be enough for Spurs, but it is a massive task.
I've not seen any team news, but we know that Toby Alderweireld, Erik Lamela and Ben Davies are still not available. I expect a strong line-up for a must-win game, with perhaps Kieran Trippier replacing Kyle Walker. Dele Alli should be involved, and perhaps we will see Sissoko and Son in the starting line-up with Harry Kane up front. I am thinking Eriksen may get a needed rest. Predictions? Nothing from me, except the hope that is will indeed be a historic night for Spurs. My match report will be online on Wednesday night.
Match referee Bjorn Kuipers and his team of officials are from The Netherlands. Mr. Kuipers has not been in charge of a Spurs game before, but he is a prominent FIFA and UEFA official, having had charge of three games in Euro 2016, and 6 International or Champions League games so far this season.
