Don't bet on a win at The Bet365 Stadium!
After the hiatus of the first international break of the season, Spurs resume their Premier League programme with a trip to the scene of perhaps their greatest performance and victory of last season. When we beat Stoke 4-0 in April, the Spurs crowd chanted a resounding, "Leicester City, we're coming for you". The atmosphere was simply our best of the season. Sadly we know too well what happened after that as we failed to win any of our last four games, slipping to third place on the last day behind you know who. Still - we have got Wednesday night's Champions League game at Wembley to look forward to as a result of our endeavours over the course of last season.
Mark Hughes' Stoke City side is surely in a false position after three games, lying at the bottom of the table with the solitary point they gained in their first game at The Riverside Stadium. They've had the mis-fortune to face the in-form and flying Manchester City, and then in their last game at Goodison Park, they were only beaten when goalkeeper Shay Given managed to save Leighton Baines' penalty kick, when the ball bounced back off the post and into the net of the back of the unlucky goalkeeper's head.
This will be as hard a fixture as they come in front of the usual partisan and brash home crowd, against a side that will be surely fired up to lift themselves up the table. Our recent record in away games at what is now "The Bet365 Stadium" is good with three wins in the last four games, but that April win was our first against "The Potters" in four games at home and away. Personally, I wouldn't bet on a Spurs win tomorrow!
One of my favourite tweets on Transfer Deadline Day was by Peter Crouch who said "Technical fault with the chopper. Looks like I'm staying put". So he has, but the best he can probably hope for against us is an appearance off the bench. Crouch (36 in January)did score a hat-trick in Stoke's only win so far - a 4-0 drubbing of Stevenage in the second round EFL Cup game. That came almost 6 years to the day after he scored a hat-trick for us against Young Boys to ensure our progress to the Group Stage of the 2010-11 Champions League. (Spurs 4 Young Boys 0 - 25.08.10). It was also the last hat-trick Peter had scored. Most clubs for whom Peter has played have fond memories of him I suspect. We certainly do, because after that hat-trick against Young Boys, he scored in our first Group game - a 2-2 draw at Werder Bremen, and most famously in February 2011 he scored our dramatic winner in The San Siro against AC Milan.
Crouchie did start Stoke's last game at Goodison Park, but he hasn't been a regular starter for Hughes for a couple of seasons now. On deadline day, Hughes acquired Wilfried Bony on loan from Man City. After being signed by City for big money from Swansea in January 2015 the Ivorian has struggled to make headway in a team rich with talent, including of course the prolific Aguero. Bony attracted attention because of his prolific scoring record at Swansea, and, if selected, will surely benefit from the flair that does exist in the Stoke midfield.
Hughes did not include much new talent in his last game, but former Liverpool man Joe Allen, who starred for Wales in Euro 2016, has been recruited. Allen is likely to be at the back of midfield, but the creative force still includes the tricky Arnautovic and Shaqiri when fit. There is also Bojan Krkic. (Shaqiri is out for this game with a calf injury.)
Other recent recruits for Stoke include 19 year old Egyptian midfielder Ramadan Sobhi and 24 year old Dutch defender Bruno Martins-Indi. French under-21 midfielder Gianelli Imbula arrived in January and is a regular starter. Goalkeeper Jack Butland faces another two months out after ankle surgery this week, which means that 40 year old Given is likely to start against us. 33 year old goalkeeper Lee Grant has come on loan from Derby in this transfer window to offer more support. If Given gets the nod, he would be playing his 450th Premier League game, which would make him only the fourth goalkeeper to reach this milestone. The others were David James, Mark Schwarzer and Brad Friedel, who reached that figure playing for Spurs.
Spurs have a plethora of talent available to them after a very good window, including the last day in which Moussa Sissoko was dramatically signed from Newcastle. With Dembele having to sit out his final game of a 6 match suspension, Sissoko is surely likely to start this game. Erik Lamela played the first 66 minutes of Argentina's game in Venezuela in the early hours of Wednesday (UK Time), and perhaps will be rested with Monaco in mind. The Spurs bench will look stronger too with Georges-Kevin Nkoudou also signed on deadline day.
The good news is that club captain Hugo Lloris has been declared fit. Mousa Dembele serves the last match of his 6-game ban inflicted after "The Battle of Stamford Bridge". The bad news is that Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that Danny Rose came back from England duty with a hamstring injury and will miss this game, and probably Monaco next Wednesday. Ben Davies will wecome the opportunity to claim the left back position.
Despite my lack of confidence about tomorrow's result, I am predicting a Spurs win - 2-0.
Tmorrow's match referee is Anthony Taylor, now a well-established member of the Premier League referees' team. Mr Taylor is kept busy at home and abroad, and so far this season has been in charge of games in Greece, Belgium and Romania at club and International level. He has taken charge of 15 Spurs games. Mr Taylor's first and last games in charge of us were against Newcastle - at home in December 2010 (won 2-0), and away in May 9 (lost 5-1). Spurs Odyssey voters swere not happy with him on either occasion, and his overall average grade is a below par 5.56.
· Reviewing Spurs' last Champions League Season - 2010-11. This time 6 years ago, Spurs drew 1-1 at The Hawthorns. Rafa van der Vaart made his Spurs debut. Luka Modric scored our goal. Wilson Palacios was in our side, and later moved to Stoke with Peter Crouch. Wilson is now playing in the USA with Miami.
