Back to the San Siro!
This will be our fourth trip to the San Siro in recent years and our third visit for a game against Internazionale to give Inter their full name. The team with whom they share the famous stadium is of course A.C Milan and both teams have suffered relative decline in recent years.
Inter gained access to the Champions League (for the first time in six years) on the last day of the season with a dramatic 3-2 away win against Lazio. Lazio actually had a better goal difference, but in Serie A it's head-to-head results that count which gave Inter the nod. AC Milan finished sixth and made it to The Europa League.
When Spurs played Inter in what was our first foray into the Champions League in 2010, Inter were the reigning Champions of Europe, Italy and also their domestic Cup holders. Jose Mourinho had led them to that success but then left for Real Madrid, who we would meet in the quarter-finals in the Spring of 2011. By the time we played Inter, Rafa Benitez was the man in charge.
Both our Group A games were memorable occasions. We played away first in October 2010, and went 4-0 down at half-time. Samuel Eto'o had scored twice including from a penalty after Heurelho Gomes had been sent off. Gareth Bale led a magnificent fightback by Spurs with a sensational hat-trick which led to the original "Taxi for Maicon" chant. The score finished 4-3, but gave Spurs a lot of hope with the massed home crowd in the San Siro baying for the final whistle.
In my match report for the home match against Inter played on 2nd November, I met a man after the game who had been at our famous European Cup semi-final against Benfica in 1962, but he described our 3-1 win as "the best ever"! Rafa van der Vaart, Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko scored our goals, but Bale was again our man of the match with a stupendous 9.7 grade out of 10.
Spurs went to the top of the group, and would win it after all six games. Inter also qualified for the knock-out phases and both clubs made it to the quarter-finals. Eto'o would finish equal second with Bayern Munich's Mario Gomez on 8 goals for the tournament behind only Lionel Messi, who we will see next month at Wembley. A future Spur - Roberto Soldado - scored 6 Champions League goals for Valencia that season.
In 2011-12 we again finished fourth in the Premier League, but because of the rules at the time and sixth placed Chelsea's Champions League win, we had to settle for the Europa League in 2012-13, meeting Inter again in the Round of 16. We had won 3-0 at home on March 7th, but at 3-0 down in the San Siro the following week, we relied upon a solitary away goal by Adebayor to give us passage to the next round despite a 4-1 away defeat. Hugo Lloris was our sub goalkeeper (Brad Friedel played) for both those games. Both Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele played in both matches. Vertonghen scored in the first game. Gareth Bale was suspended and sorely missed in the away match.
Inter won the Coppa Italia again in 2011, but that was their last major success and they have suffered relative decline since 2012. Inter did finish fourth in 2016, but at that time Serie A did not have the four places they have regained after the most recent changes to UEFA qualification rules. Thus Inter benefited twice when they beat Lazio in May, thanks to both UEFA and Serie A rules!
Inter's current manager is Luciano Spalletti, aged 59, who was previously in charge of Roma, joining Inter last season. Spalletti has primarily been based in Italy (Empoli, Samdoria, Venezia, Udinese, and Roma), but spent 4 years in charge of Zenit St Petersburg. Inter have played four Serie A games so far and have yet to win at home. Their one victory was 3-0 at Bologna, whereas they drew 2-2 at home to Torino and lost on Saturday 1-0 at home to Parma. Thus Inter have just 4 points and are fourth from bottom of the early season Serie A table.
Croatian midfielder Ivan Perisic, who had such a good World Cup and scored the equaliser against England in the World Cup semi-final, has scored two of Inter's five goals so far. Inter have this summer signed Nainggolan from Roma, Asamoah from Juventus, and striker Lautaro Martinez from Racing Club Argentina, amongst others. Goalkeeper Samir Handanovic has played all four games this season, and is a survivor from the team we met in 2013.
Spurs have travelled without Hugo Lloris, Dele Alli and Moussa Sissoko. I also undersand that neither Kieran Trippier or Toby Alderweireld have travelled. Mauricio Pochettino will ring some changes, switching one or both of his his full backs and including Davinson Sanchez. I hope to see Erik Lamela make a start, and better form with more creativity than that we saw on Saturday from the whole team.
Both sides had a bad weekend, and have had a less than happy start to the season overall, despite the fact that we did win our first three games. Both will be looking to kick start their Group B campaign, and with in-form Barcelona and PSV in the grouop, a win to start the campaign would be ideal. I have a feeling that Spurs will take the points tomorrow, perhaps by the odd goal. I will be travelling and the match report will not be seen online before Wednesday evening.
Match referee Clement Turpin and his officials are from France. Monsieur Turpin took charge of last week's friendly between England and Switzerland. This referee was in charge last year when we beat Borussia Dortmand 2-1 away when Harry Kane and Son Heung-min scored our goals. A repeat of that scoreline would be highly satisfactory!
NB:- The match kicks off at 5.55pm BST
· "It was Twenty Years ago today!" - On 19th September, 1998, Spurs drew 1-1 at The Dell. Matt Le Tissier scored for "Saints" and Ruel Fox scored for Spurs.
