History almost repeating itself
On December 15th 2013, we played Liverpool at home and lost 5-0. Our next game was a home League Cup quarter-final against West Ham, which we lost. Having achieved a different result on Sunday with an excellent team performance, we must hope for another positive result tomorrow. History has already failed to repeat itself regarding this particular scenario.
Another positive piece of news for Spurs is that only Bryan Gil and Dane Scarlett remain on the injury list regarding Covid. With Sergio Reguilon, Oliver Skipp and Lucas Moura all coming off the bench against Liverpool, it seems that Antonio Conte will be able to field a strong team against West Ham. Our only key absentee will be Cristian Romero.
West Ham's last game was defeat against Arsenal last Wednesday. Right back Vladimir Coufal was showm two yellow cards in that game, and as he was not able to serve his suspension in the postponed Norwich game, Coufal will have to miss our game here. Centre-back Angelo Ogbonna will miss a significant chunk of West Ham’s season after the 33-year-old Italy defender sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee during the 3-2 win over Liverpool in November.
"The Hammers" are also now missing Kurt Zouma with a hamstring. Dawson and Diop were the centre-back replacements last week, and although West Ham lost, Craig Dawson had an impressive game. Dawson, now 31, spent the bulk of his career with West Brom, but moved to West Ham from Watford this season, having been on loan last season. Dawson has played in 14 of "The Hammers"' league matches this season, although he was a very late substitute in our October league defeat.
The West Ham team for that game was:- Fabianski; Johnson, Zouma, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Soucek, Rice (Capt.); Bowen (sub Dawson (90+1), Benrahma (sub Lanzini, 85), Fornals; Antonio. Ben Johnson faces a late fitness test, as does left back Aaron Cresswell, now a veteran of 237 Premier League games for "The Hammers".
Lukasz Fabianski has now played 115 Premier League games for West Ham, having previously played for Arsenal and Swansea. Alphonse Areola has been West Ham's League Cup goalkeeper in both their previous games, in which they have overcome both Manchester teams, beating City on penalties in the last round. Areola is actually on loan from PSG, although he has latterly played for Real Madrid and Fulham on loan.
Fabianski is now 36. He first played against Spurs for Arsenal in the 2008 League Cup semi-finals which we drew 1-1 away and famously won 5-1 at home.Of course, we went on to win the trophy against Chelsea in February 2008.
West Ham have been having a good season, but lost fourth place to Arsenal last week. Their fans will be at The Lane tomorrow night in force, and they might even win the game. I don't think so though. The evidence of Sunday is that Conte used the club's enforced downtime well, and that he has got his players moving swiftly towards the level he (and we) desire.
"The Hammers" have never won the League Cup. Spurs have won it four times. West Ham's last trophy was in 1980, as per the gag:- "Sunderland won it in 1979, Villa won it in '81, but who won it in 1980". (The answer is Brooking, and the trophy was the FA Cup). Spurs have won 6 trophies since then. It would seem that the Covid problems that led to West Ham's weekend game postponement were in the Norwich camp, so there must be every hope that this game can go ahead. I think we are going to win.
You can follow the links above and associated previews for more history between the two clubs, but our last league Cup meeting was three years ago when an 18-year-old Oliver Skipp made his senior Spurs debut, "Sonny" scored twice, and we won 3-1! COME ON YOU SPURS!
NB:- If the scores are level after 90 minutes, there will be no extra time, and we shall move straight to penalties. The game is being shown on SKY TV and kicks off at 7.45pm.
Chris Kavanagh, who was Paul Tierney's VAR in Sunday's draw against Liverpool is our referee tonight. Previously this season, Mr. Kavanagh was in charge of our home win against Aston Villa and our draw at Goodison Park.
