It's Trafalgar Day, but we don't want a battle, just a win!
Matchday tomorrow is Trafalgar Day, and of course Vitesse is located in the city of Arnhem, famous for a crucial World War Two battle. We don't want a battle tomorrow, just a win! Having said that, we will require those representing Spurs to fight hard for the club's European campaign. We do not want this to be a bridge too far.
Clearly Nuno and his coaching team have been planning ahead for this week. On Sunday no substitutes were used against Newcastle, and in his press conference today Nuno has confirmed that Sunday's eleven starters will not travel to The Netherlands. Matt Doherty and Ryan Sessegnon are not available, so a starting line-up of Gollini; Tanganga, Sanchez, Rodon, Davies; Winks, Dele; Gil, Lo Celso, Bergwijn and Scarlett is envisaged with youth providing back-up on the bench.
Spurs have never previously played Vitesse Arnhem in a competitive game.
SBV Vitesse is one of the oldest professional clubs in the Eredivisie, having been established in 1892. The club plays at the GeireDome, which holds 21,248. The stadium is multi-purpose, also hosting conferences and concerts, and has a retractable football field.
Vitesse (Arnhem) beat Dundalk 4-3(aggregate) in the 3rd qualifying round, and then Anderlecht 5-4 (aggregate) in the play-off. Anderlecht, who we know too well in our European exploits, were quite a scalp for Vitesse, who scored three goals to draw away from home (Dasa, Baden Frederiksen, Tannane) before a 2-1 home win when left back Maximilian Wittek scored both goals. Wittek also scored in Vitesse's home defeat against Rennes on Matchday Two of this competition.
Vitesse beat Mura 2-0 away on Matchday One but lost 2-1 at home to Rennes in their last game. It will be vital for Spurs to now beat Vitesse in both their meetings with our Matchday 6 game at home to Rennes likely to decide first and second place in the group. Vitesse will have other ideas, of course.
Vitesse qualified for Europe this year on the back of a fourth place finish last season, ahead of Feyenoord. Feyenoord are also in the Europa Conference League, currently top of Group E. Vitesse beat Feyenoord 2-1 (at home) in their last pre-International break game. Both their goals were scored by 21-year-old Belgian Ikoma "Lois" Openda. These were Openda's first league goals of the season. Openda is a loanee from Club Brugge and last season scored 10 league goals for Vitesse in 30 games. He has been a prolific (11 goals in 12 games) scorer in the Belgian U-21 side.
Vitesse have competed in Europe in 15 previous seasons, going back to The Intertoto Cup in 1978-79, but their last European venture was three years ago, and short-lived as they were knocked out in the Third Qualifying Round of the Europa League by Basel.
In six home games so far this season, Vitesse have won twice, against Anderlecht and Feyenoord, which are probably their most noteworthy results. Their coach is German national Thomas Letsch (53) who is in his second season, having joined Vitesse from FK Austria (Vienna).
Vitesse beat NEC 1-0 away on Sunday with their goal scored by 21-year-old Baden Frederiksen, who is a Danish U-21 International. As a result they moved up to sixth place after 9 games. (W 5 D1 L3) We played NEC away in the 2008-09 UEFA Cup. There were disturbing scenes on Sunday when a stand (occupied by celebrating Vitesse fans) collapsed after the game. I hope nobody was hurt.
Clearly, Nuno and his team have made a calculated decision regarding their strategy for this game. I hope that our team can come back with all three points, but you can't be over-confident in our first eleven, let alone this selection. Here's hoping! The game kicks off at 5.45pm UK tike tomorrow and is being shown on BT SPORT.
Referee Harm Osmers and his team are from Germany. Three of these four officials, including Herr Osmers, officiated our Europa League 2nd qualifying round game last season against Lokomotiv Plovdiv. We won that game thanks to late goals by Harry Kane (penalty) and Tanguy Ndombele. Herr Osmers showed two red cards to our opponents surrounding the penalty and I've noticed he does not seem to be shy of showing reds (10) over the last year!
