The stakes are high - again
It’s another crunch game for Spurs in their chase for a place in the top four and a Champions League place next week. If we accept that Spurs are still in that chase, then so are Bruno Lage’s Wolves. If Wolves beat us tomorrow, then they would go above us. Although they have played one more game than Spurs, why shouldn’t they regard themselves as being in the hunt for a prestigious (and money-making) place in Europe?
I would have preferred their game on Thursday night against Arsenal to have been a draw, but Wolves would already be above us had they won and not lost a tight game. Tight games are the norm for Wolves, who have scored just 19 league goals. Only Norwich and Burnley (both in the bottom three) have scored less than Wolves. On the other hand, only Manchester City have conceded less goals. Wolves’ defence is on a par with the top three clubs as Chelsea and Liverpool have conceded 18 and 19 goals respectively. Wolves’ meagre plus two goal difference is one better than that of Spurs. Make no mistake. Conte’s men will need to lift their game massively from their poor performance (particularly defensively) seen on Wednesday night’s defeat to Southampton.
Both our games earlier in the season were tight affairs. Nuno was still our manager then, of course. A penalty won and scored by Dele Alli was enough to give us the three points in August, and the following month we won a penalty shoot-out in the League Cup Third Round. Another departed Spur, Tanguy Ndombele, scored one of our two goals in normal playing time.
Wolves’ league goals have come primarily from Jimenez and summer signing Hwang Hee-chan (whose move was made permanent in January). Both have scored just four goals and Lage has expressed concern that more goals are needed from the support players. Both Hwang and 35-year-old Moutinho will have late fitness tests for tomorrow’s game. Wolves have failed to score in their last two games -both at home – against Norwich in the FA Cup and then Arsenal on Thursday.
Spurs were being strongly linked in January with Adama Traore, but he has returned (initially on loan) to Barcelona for whom he started in their recent 4-2 win over Atletico Madrid. Conte has confirmed that Dier, Tanganga and Skipp are side-lined. This is unfortunate in each case, as our team could do with fresh legs after playing unchanged teams in the last two games against South coast sides. I’d like to see Romero back to the right of Sanchez. Conte has suggested that both our new signings could start, although I fancy only Bentancur will start for either Winks or Hojbjerg. Rodrigo showed some creative flair in his brief time on the field against Southampton. Maybe Matt Doherty will get the nod over Emerson Royal against his old team. Ever the optimist, I have predicted a 2-1 win for Spurs. The game is not being televised live here in the UK but kicks off at 2pm tomorrow. The reason for us playing tomorrow is Wolves’ TV commitment on Thursday.
In May this year we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of our 1972 UEFA Cup Final win against Wolves. The game was played over two legs, the first of which was at Molineux. This match was refereed by Tofik Bahramov, an Azerbaijani national after whom their National Stadium is named. Mr Bahramov was also "the Russian linesman" who signalled England's disputed third goal in the 1966 World Cup Final. Martin Chivers hit the post with a free kick after five minutes, but Spurs did not take the lead until the 57th minute when he headed home a free kick by Mike England. Chivers scored a second goal two minutes from time after Jim McCalliog had equalised. This was an unstoppable Chivers 25-yarder.
Alan Mullery gave us a 3-1 aggregate lead after 29 minutes of the second leg, and the trophy belonged to Spurs despite a goal by Dave Wagstaffe. "Mullers" had famously been recalled by manager Bill Nicholson from a loan at Fulham and took part in the semi-final win against AC Milan and then the final. The second leg was Alan's last Spurs game, and the goal offered a great swansong.
Wolves legend Ron Flowers, member of the 1966 England World Cup-winning squad, died last December, aged 87.
Flowers played 515 times for Wolves, placing him fifth on their all-time appearances list, and earned 49 caps for England. Ron Flowers was the oldest member of England’s 1966 squad.
Ron Flowers' last game against Spurs was in an amazing 7-4 game (won by Spurs) at White Hart Lane in March 1965. Flowers was one of those World Cup squad players who was presented with a winners' medal in 2009 along with our own Jimmy Greaves. It's amazing to think that Greaves did not score one of our seven goals against Wolves in that 1965 game. For the record, our scorers were Les Allen, Alan Gilzean (2), Eddie Clayton and Cliff Jones (3). Les Allen was playing his penultimate game for Spurs and scored his last goal for the club. Brothers Cyril and Peter Knowles played on opposing sides. Wolves were relegated that season but returned to the top flight two years later.
We haven't seen referee Kevin Friend in the middle since our 4-0 win over Burnley last February. This will be Mr Friend's 32nd game in the middle with Spurs. His very first Spurs game was a 2-0 home win against Sunderland in November 2009. Mr. Friend has had charge of just 8 Premier League games. The last was the Palace v Liverpool game after which he was stood down following the award of a late penalty when Diogo Jots collided with goalkeeper Vicente Guaita. He has since been in charge of Millwall v Preston North End and Cardiff v Peterborough.
