Teddy Sheringham is a Spurs legend, and while you may not see him too heavily involved in football these days, the memory of him of course lives on.
He bagged over 100 goals for the club during his two spells there, while becoming one of the Premier League’s all time greats throughout his career.
Now aged 57, we thought we’d celebrate the striker and delve into the details you may not know about him. So, here are five facts about Teddy that you may not know…
He Almost Quit Football at Age 15
Believe it or not, Teddy Sheringham almost gave up on football when he was just 15 years old. At the time, he was playing for Leytonstone and Ilford, but he wasn't enjoying the experience. He was struggling to make an impact on the pitch and was feeling disillusioned with the sport. However, his dad encouraged him to stick with it, and Teddy ultimately decided to continue playing. It's safe to say that this was a wise decision, as he went on to have an incredible career.
He Was a Talented Cricketer
While football was undoubtedly Teddy Sheringham's greatest passion, he was also a talented cricketer in his youth. He played as a wicket-keeper for Essex Schools and was even offered a contract by the county team. However, he turned it down in order to focus on his football career. It's interesting to think about what might have happened if he had chosen to pursue cricket instead!
He Made His International Debut Late
Teddy Sheringham made his debut for the England national team in 1993, at the age of 27. Despite that, he went on to make over 50 appearances for his nation and played in some huge games, most notably during Euro 96 where he formed a lethal partnership with Alan Shearer.
He is a Fine Poker Player
Teddy may have had a killer instinct in front of goal, but he also did on the green baize of the poker table too. Since retirement from the beautiful game, he’s picked up some huge pots in poker tournaments, and is a gambling enthusiast.
The legend is well versed in casino games, and you’d expect to see him more on the online tables of casinos such as 777 these days compared to a football pitch!
His Last Game Was Also the End of an Era
When he called time on his playing career at Colchester United, it wasn’t just the end of an era for him, but also for Colchester as it was the club’s last ever game at Layer Road before moving into a new stadium.
