A cauldron awaits at Villa Park
Thanks to Andy Park for this picture
A cauldron-hot atmosphere awaits us tomorrow night at Villa Park. Firstly because Villa are livid at the re-arrangement of this fixture to allow Spurs more time to prepare for their Europa League Final, and secondly because in-form Villa are challenging for one of the five Champions League places being awarded this season, related to creditable league performance.
The game was re-arranged even before Spurs had qualified, but the match between Chelsea and our opponents in Bilbao - Manchester United - had already been fixed. Both games are being televised on SKY. Our game kicks off at 7.30pm.
When the two teams met in November both were in the top half of the table after 9 games. Villa were fourth. Spurs were eighth. We won 4-1 with one of our best performances of the season. Dominic Solanke scored two goals in a Premier League game for the only time this season. The win came at the end of a spell in which we won 4 out of five games, which included a similar scoreline against West Ham and a League Cup win over Manchester City.
Needless to say, that was our best run of a desperately poor league season. We managed only one win in our next 8 games, which incredibly was the 4-0 win at The Etihad.
Conversely, Villa's defeat at Tottenham was one of four consecutive defeats and their worst spell of the season. They sit in sixth place and a win will put pressure on their fellow challengers for that precious qualification for the Champions League. Having reached the quarter-finals when they were beaten by finalists PSG "Villans" fans would love another Champions League season. With 8 wins in their last 10 league games, Villa are in tip-top form, and hot favourites to beat Spurs.
Spurs' league form is dismal with just one win (over bottom club Southampton) in their last ten games. After the likely defeat tomorrow, our solitary win is going to disappear off our last six form guide. We are likely to start next season with a winless six-match form guide. It is all so depressing.
Spurs scored 4 goals in consecutive games against Villa last year. In last season's away game we won 4-0 in March, with goals by James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Heung-min Son and Timo Werner. Thus Maddison and Johnson scored in consecutive games against "The Villans". We raised hopes of winning the race for fourth place, but that was not to be due to our end of season inconsistency.
James Maddison scored his 50th Premier League goal in this season's home game. He, like our other playmakers - Kuliusevski and Bergvall - will miss this game and the remainder of the season.
As can be seen in our overall league record above, we have outscored Villa in all top-flight meetings.
The previous occasions when we scored 4 or more in consecutive games against Villa were April (home) and September (away) 1956, August 1962 (home) and September 1963 (away), December 2012 and September 2013 (both away). The 2013 game was a League Cup tie. Gareth Bale scored a hat-trick in the 2012 Boxing Day "carvery".
There have been higher scores by both teams in previous games, notably a 5-1 away win for Spurs in January 1934, a 6-2 home win in 1958 (4 for Bobby Smith), and another 6-2 in our double season. There was a famous 5-5 at White Hart Lane in March 1966, when Spurs had been 5-1 up and so nearly lost 6-5. Villa's Tony Hateley scored four.
Spurs conceded five home goals in April 1992, and scored five in 1976 and 2005. Another famous game was our 2007 "125th Anniversary game" when Younes Kaboul rescued a point in the last minute in a 4-4 draw.
In their 4-1 home win over Newcastle last month Ollie Watkins became Villa's joint-top Premier League goalscorer - alongside Gabriel Agbonlahor - on 74 goals. Having scored Villa's winner at Bournemouth last Saturday, Watkins became the record holder.
Son Heung-min has scored six goals in eight Premier League appearances against Aston Villa, though they were all netted at Villa Park. No player has scored more against an opponent without scoring a home goal in the competition. Son will get more minutes tomorrow in preparation for the big match next Wednesday. Postecoglou will have to balance between giving more of his first choice players a run-out, experimenting with his formation, bearing in mind the absence of key midfielders, and providing competitive opposition. He and the players will be desperate to avoid more injuries, and I predict a 3-1 defeat.
Peter Bankes referees Spurs for the fourteenth time. This will be Mr. Bankes' fourth Spurs game of the season, after Tamworth, Manchester United and Nottingham Forest (H). Mr. Bankes refereed the same fixture on May 13th 2023 when we lost 2-1.
Did you know? - Villa last won a major trophy in 1996 and have not won the FA Cup since 1957 (2-1 against Manchester United). Both Villa's goals in that game were scored by Northern Ireland international Peter McParland, who passed away on 4th May, aged 91. Both McParland's goals were scored past emergency goalkeeper Jackie Blanchflower (Danny's brother), after the Villa winger had injured goalkeeper Ray Wood in an early challenge. In the days before substitutes, Wood was consigned to playing a passenger role on the wing.
A year later McParland was a pallbearer at Duncan Edwards' funeral. Edwards played for United in that 1957 Cup Final, and was a victim of the Munich Air crash in 1958.
McParland was greatly admired by Jimmy Greaves, and I believe a boyhood favourite of his fellow countryman Pat Jennings. Both Jennings and McParland were born in Newry.
