Hot date in the Arctic

The game is about Glory

On the sixth anniversary of our magnificent Champions League semi-final win in Amsterdam against Ajax, Spurs have a hot date in the Arctic against Bodo/Glimt. Whilst we hold a 3-1 lead in the tie, we'll be playing on a tricky artificial surface, hampered by more injuries and we will need to invoke the spirit of the legendary Bill Nicholson, who guided us to three European semi-final wins, and follow the example of Keith Burkinshaw and Mauricio Pochettino who also led us to European finals.

Sadly, current head coach Ange Postecoglou's history as Celtic manager in defeat against this Norwegian side three years ago is not a good omen. As you can see above, good teams have lost here this season.

Spurs also performed dismally on artificial turf in their FA Cup tie at non-league Tamworth in January. Captain Son Heung-min will again be absent. It seems that Dominic Solanke might be fit to start this game.

We do know that playmaker James Maddison is now out for the rest of the season, and that the same probably applies to Lucas Bergvall who has had such an impressive season. Just 19, Bergvall has played in 45 of our 55 matches to date. Maddison is a playmaker. Bergvall has been one of few Spurs players seeking to carry the ball forward and create opportunities. However, I believe I spotted Bergvall in the travelling party. "Deki" Kulusevski, who has still to recover his full flair and form since missing 7 games between March and April, has still to regain his best form and fitness.

Bodo/Glimt will have returning players such as captain Patrick Berg and key midfielder Hakon Evjen.

Bodo/Glimt are one of only two top-flight European clubs across the 55 UEFA nations to be based in the Arctic Circle.

The other is Tromso - who we played at home and away in the 2013 Europa League group phase. The two clubs have a fierce rivalry - despite being 322km apart - and are the world's northernmost top-tier teams.

It will be a tough game and just 54% of voters think Spurs will succeed and reach the final, to be played in Bilbao on May 21st, probably against Manchester United. I think we will succeed and perhaps win 2-1 tomorrow (8pm TNT). Here's hoping!

Match referee Maurizio Mariani and his team of officials are from Italy. Signor Mariani refereed Spurs in 2020 (Antwerp away) and 2021 (Pacos Ferreira away). We lost both matches 1-0, a result which would see us through to a sixth European Final.

Did you know? - (Bearing in mind we began this preview mentioning the Ajax game of 6 years ago) Just two teams, Ajax (in 1995/96 against Panathinaikos) and Tottenham Hotspur (in 2018/19 against Ajax), have ever lost the first leg of a Champions League semi-final at home and gone on to reach the final. That record is intact after Arsenal's defeat tonight in Paris.
