A tale of two seasons
To paraphrase Charles Dickens, in the 53 games of a potential 60-game season we've had the best of times and the worst of times. In our 12-game Europa League campaign, we've won 7, drawn 3 and lost just two matches. Percentage-wise those figures compare favourably with our Premier League record of won 11, drawn 4 and lost 19. It's been a tale of two seasons and we must hope that we can match our better winning performances in tomorrow's semi-final first leg game at home (8pm - TNT).
Personal circumstances dictate that I write and publish this preview before hearing any official team news, but Ange Postecoglou's solitary target is to win this competition (his "second-season trophy"), and thus gain entry to the Champions League against teams who have had a successful domestic campaign (and/or win this year's competition).
Ange Postecoglou has joined a very exclusive club of four Spurs managers who have guided the team to a European semi-final. His predecessors were Bill Nicholson (5), Keith Burkinshaw (2) and Mauricio Pochettino (1).
It's 41 years since we reached the semi-final of the equivalent competition in 1984, when we went on to win the trophy. 6 years ago, of course, we made it through the semi-finals to the Champions League Final.
Bodo/Glimt are history makers already, by becoming the first Norwegian club to reach the semi-finals of a UEFA competition. They have played four domestic games of their new season and are second with a game in hand. On Sunday they beat KFUM 3-0 at home with three late goals.
Danish forward Kasper Hogh scored two goals in that game and has scored 9 goals (two penalties) in his last 9 games this year in domestic and European games.
The Norwegian side can focus fully on this semi-final, as their scheduled intervening league game has been put back. Spurs have no such luck, with West Ham on the agenda on Sunday. So far, their attempts to bring forward the trip to Aston Villa later in the month have fallen on stony ground. Such a move would be unnecessary, of course, if we fail to make the final.
We must not underestimate Bodo, who finished ninth in the League phase of this competition. Having won the Norwegian Eliteserien in 2023, they qualified for the Champions League group phase, but lost narrowly (2-3 aggregate) to Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade), thus joining the Europa League.
Bodo/Glimt have played two more games than Spurs, as they needed to qualify through the play-off round. They've won six of their seven home games, clearly enjoying the advantage of their artificial pitch. Spurs had difficulty at Tamworth in their January FA Cup tie, and will want to gain a big advantage from this home leg.
The Norwegian club has won the league in four of the last five seasons, and has achieved some creditable results in this campaign, beating Porto, Braga, Besiktas, FC Twente, Olympiakos and finally Lazio to reach this stage. It took a penalty shoot-out in Rome's Olympic Stadium to decide the quarter-final. Lazio's penalties in front of their fans after coming back from a two-goal deficit were quite pathetic!
With the exception of Dragusin, Postecoglou should have a fully fit squad for this game. Having said that, there was no sign of Son in the training pictures published. The players need to be on their game and fully committed to the emphatic win needed before next week's second leg.
Look our for giant yellow toothbrushes in the away section tomorrow. It's a tradition, dating back to the 1970s, when the someone wanted to conduct the singing and a fellow fan had a yellow toothbrush in his pocket.
Referee Jose Maria Sanchez is refereeing a Spurs game for the first time, but he is kept busy at home and abroad. Senor Sanchez has refereed eight Champions League games this season. He and his team of officials are all from Spain. VAR Carlos del Cerro Grande refereed three previous Spurs games between 2019 and 2022.
Did you know? - While in charge at Celtic in The Europa Conference League in February 2022, Ange Postecoglou lost at home (3-1) and away to Bodo/Glimt after dropping from that season's Europa League. Celtic had finished third in their group below Bayer Leverkusen and Real Betis. In that phase, Celtic beat Ferencvaros at home and away, who we also met (and beat) this season.
