First home cup game v Man Utd at Tottenham in 26 years!
A lot has happened since our last meeting with Manchester United at Old Trafford in September when we beat Erik Ten Hag's side 3-0. Ten Hag was sacked following defeat away to West Ham a month later. Ruud van Nistelrooy was appointed as interim coach, but soon had to make way for former Sporting coach Ruben Amorim who was signed on a two-and-a-half-year contract on 1st November. Amorim commenced his duties during the November international break.
United still sit below Spurs in the league, but have climbed above us in the Europa League standings after consecutive wins over Bodo/Glimt and Viktoria Plzen. United face Rangers at home and Steaua Bucharest away in the New Year.
United climbed above us in the league table on Sunday (until we thrashed Southampton) after their remarkable win at The Etihad over arch-rivals Manchester City. 22-year old Amad Diallo was the United man of the match, winning the penalty which was scored by Bruno Fernandes in the 88th minute, before winning the game with a superb 90th minute goal.
Both Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho were left out of the United squad for Sunday's game.
United will come to Tottenham for Thursday night's Carabao Cup quarter-final in high spirits, despite recent inconsistency in their league form. Under Amorim, they lost consecutive league games at Arsenal and at home to Nuno's Nottingham Forest, who we will face on Boxing Day.
Remarkably, despite numerous cup meetings over the years (including Cup-Winners' Cup defeat in 1963 when we were the historic first British holders of a major European trophy), we have not hosted United at Tottenham in Cup competition since the December 1998 Worthington Cup quarter-final. Most fans will remember that was the season we won the only trophy not won by Sir Alex Ferguson's treble-winning side. Former Spur Teddy Sheringham scored for the visitors after 70 minutes, but we were already two-up through Chris Armstrong. Spurs' player of the season David Ginola added a super third goal for the home side.
By beating United, Spurs were on their way to winning the league cup. We have already beaten Manchester City this season, who were among our victims at the same quarter-final stage in 2007 when we also forged a path to a successful trophy-winning season. That has to be a good omen, doesn't it?
Cup meetings with United (which can be re-visited via the links above) include two away defeats in the FA Cup and a semi-final defeat at Wembley in 2018, which was our eighth successive FA Cup semi-final defeat since we last tasted victory in 1991.
As for League Cup meetings since 1998, they consist firstly of Final defeat at Wembley in 2009 when United goalkeeper Ben Foster was declared man of the match. The game itself finished 0-0, but we lost the penalty shoot-out. Foster has now retired, but finished his playing days with Wrexham, helping them win the National League in 2023. Our last League Cup meeting with United ended in a 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford when both goals were scored by Darron Gibson. Gibson has also retired and left United for Everton, spending time at Sunderland, Wigan and Salford City in his latter playing days.
Rodrigo Bentancur's appeal regarding the number of games he was banned for has been dismissed, so he cannot play till Boxing Day. Yves Bissouma can return for tomorrow's game and Destiny Udogie has a chance of playing, despite going off at Southampton. Djed Spence has surely earned another start and might take Udogie's place anyway.
A good game is in prospect, and I'm going for a narrow Spurs win! Don't forget, there is no extra-time in the event of a draw, but a penalty shoot-out.
This will be referee John Brooks' tenth game in charge of Spurs. His last game in the middle with us was our 4-0 win at Man City. Another good omen, surely! There will be no VAR in this round of the Carabao Cup.
