Not so easy this time

Everton v Spurs, 03.02.24

Thanks to Andy Park for this picture

When we beat Everton 4-0 in our first home game of the season, I described it as potentially "Spurs' easiest game of the season". We've scored four or more goals in five games since that win. I think the 5-0 away win against Southampton supercedes the Everton win. Sunday's game (2pm - SKY) will be our last league game at Goodison Park, and not so easy.

Once again, Spurs have to contend with "new manager syndrome", although for David Moyes, this is a return to the club where he spent his longest time as manager (11 years). During that time "The Toffees" did finish in the top eight ten times and even qualified for a Champions League play-off, which they lost. Everton were then immediately knocked out of the UEFA Cup in the first round. Moyes also led Everton to the 2009 FA Cup Final, but they lost to Chelsea.

David Moyes then had brief spells with Manchester United and Sunderland, before in two spells with West Ham (interrupted by Manuel Pelligrini), he did lead "The Hammers" to their Europa Conference League success. West Ham fans were still singing "Champions of Europe, we know what we are" when they lost at Villa Park in last week's FA Cup third round.

Last week, Everton sacked Sean Dyche three hours before the club's Thursday night FA Cup game against Peterborough. Veterans who played under Moyes 12 years ago - Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman - took temporary charge before Moyes was officially announced by new owners The Friedkin Group last Saturday. "It's great to be back", said Moyes. Time will be the judge regarding the wisdom of the decision to re-appoint this man, who lost his first game back at Goodison on Wednesday night.

Goodison Park is an iconic but antiquated stadium. As away fans you can suffer awful views in the dark beneath the upper tier. I know that from experience. Goodison Park hosted games in the 1966 World Cup including the incredible 5-3 win by Portugal over rookies North Korea. The new stadium at Bramley Docks will be ready for next season, and test events featuring Everton youth teams are already being arranged. Spurs did the same thing in 2019 before the first team graced our new home.

Last season, Everton lost their opening three games of a league season for the first time since 1990-91. This season they did it again. Two out of those three games were at home. Bournemouth even beat them 3-2 after being two down with three minutes of normal time remaining. Everton became the first club in Premier League history to lose a game after having a two-goal advantage in the 87th minute. The away game of those first three was the 4-0 defeat to Spurs.

Everton are a team with worse 6-game form than Spurs, gaining three points to our four. "The Toffees" have managed just one goal in those six games, whereas we have scored 12 times.

There have been 175 league meetings between the two clubs, but only two of those were outside the top tier. These were in the 1930-31 season. Everton won the home match 4-2 when Dixie Dean scored "The Toffees"' fourth goal. Jimmy Smy scored both Spurs' goals. Smy was born in Edmonton in November 1907 and made just 17 appearances for Tottenham. He played just two more games for Spurs and scored one more goal after the Everton match. Those were Smy's last Football League appearances for any club. Ted Harper scored the only goal of the game when we won at White Hart Lane in March 1931.

Everton won the Division Two title that season. Spurs finished third and had to wait until 1933 for promotion.

Dixie Dean, whose statue is just outside the Goodison Park Stadium, scored a record 60 goals in an English top flight season in 1927-28. Dixie also scored a record 310 top flight goals for one club.

The Toffees are winless in 11 league fixtures against Spurs at Goodison Park since a 2-1 triumph in December 2012 (D7, L3).

Tottenham have scored more Premier League goals against Everton both overall (106) and at home (67) than they have against any other opponent.

Everton have won just one of their last 24 Premier League games against Tottenham (D11 L11), a 1-0 away win in September 2020 under Carlo Ancelotti.

The last five encounters between the sides at Goodison Park have ended level. Everton's most recent home win against Spurs was 5-4 after extra-time in the FA Cup fifth round in 2021. Richarlison scored twice for the Toffees.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin hasn't scored since September. Everton's joint top scorers in the league are Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil with three apiece. Everton have failed to score in eight of their last eleven league games. McNeil has been absent with a knee injury since mid-December.

I don't anticipate any changes to the Spurs squad for this game, although we might have Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven back by the end of the month. Ange Postecoglou has stated that Ben Davies is available and will play a part in this game, while both Yves Bissouma and Brennan Johnson are doubts. Bentancur can return for the Leicester game after his concussion lay-off. Romero lasted 15 minutes of the Chelsea game on 8th December and that was the only time we saw him since 3rd November. Similarly, Van de Ven's only appearance since 30th October was that Chelsea game. We've missed both our first choice centre-backs so badly.

Everton are just one point above the drop zone and desperately need a win. Spurs are not quite so desperate, although after Saturday's results we have fallen to 15th place. All Spurs fans want points from this game and Leicester next week to ease the nerves. I'm going for a 2-0 away win! To add to our woes, rumours are circulating to the effect Solanke has suffered a knee injury in training. Our troubles continue, it seems.

With this game, we will have seen more of Darren England (4 times) than any other referee this season. It's his eighth Spurs game and his last was our last Premier League win at Southampton. Here's to another! We certainly need it.

Did you know? - It's nearly three years since we drew a Premier League game 0-0. That was on St. Georges Day 2022 at Brentford. We also drew 0-0 at Goodison Park that season, in November 2021. Everton have had five 0-0 draws this season.
