The Spurs Odyssey Flag

Spurs have never played a competitive game against Ferencvaros, nor have we played such a game against any Hungarian side. Based at The Ferencvaros Stadion (known as the "Groupama Arena" for sponsorship purposes), Budapest with a capacity of 23,700, Ferencvaros are this year celebrating their 125th anniversary, having been founded in 1899.

Ferencvaros, known as "The Green Eagles", won their 12-team league by 16 points last season and qualified for the early stages of The Champions League. They beat Welsh Premier League side The New Saints (of Oswestry) 7-1 on aggregate in their first qualifier but then lost 3-1 on aggregate to Denmark's FC Midtjylland, who are now also in The Europa League.

In The Europa League play-off Ferencvaros beat Bosnia & Herzegova's Borac Naja Luka in a penalty shoot-out. Last week Ferencvaros lost 2-1 in Belgium to Anderlecht who were captained by former Wolves and Aston Villa defender Leander Dendoncker. Jan Vertonghen (now 37) is in the Anderlecht squad, but did not feature.

Last year Ferencvaros played in the Europa Conference League but were knocked out by Olympiakos in the Round of 32.

Ferencvaros do have a history of hooliganism and racist chants and banners, which is no doubt a big factor in the precautionary measures being made with regard to our bold travelling supporters.

Ferencvaros was a familiar name in European competition in the sixties and seventies, winning the 1964-65 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and losing the 1968 Final to Leeds. In 1975, they reached the European Cup-Winners Cup Final, but lost to Dynamo Kyiv.

Barnabas Varga was the Hungarian League's (first tier) top scorer last season with 20 goals and has scored three goals in 6 club matches this season. Varga has 16 Hungarian caps and has scored 7 goals for his country.

Ferencvaros top their league with maximum points from 6 games. Last Saturday they beat Puskas Akademia (the second-placed side) 3-0. All three goals were scored by Brazilian forward Saldanha (born on my birthday 1999!).

Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that neither Son or Udogie have travelled. Bearing in mind that Dragusin is suspended, following his sending-off last week, and Djed Spence was not named in the Europa League squad, I think we will start with a strong side and include Romero, Van de Ven and Davies at the back. They might even form a back three with wing-backs perhaps being deployed. Ange has plenty of options in front of the defence, but I think will need an experienced side in what promises to be a hot atmosphere.

I take Spurs to win by one goal in a difficult game.

Match referee Igor Pajac and all officials are from Croatia. Mr. Pajac is another first-time referee for Spurs. He has refereed four domestic and International European games over the last year.
