Looking for a hat-trick of wins!
Spurs travel to Ipswich for the first time since January 2002 looking for their first hat-trick of Premier League wins since December 2023. Last week's win over Manchester United gave us only our second sequence of back-to-back league wins this season. Our hosts would give their eye teeth for any win, having managed just three all season.
Famously, the first of those was at Tottenham in November at the 11th attempt. Thus, Ipswich Town became the last of the 20 teams to win a game in this Premier League season. This was their first away win in the Premier League since a 2-1 victory at Everton on 2nd February 2002. Their previous win in the Premier League had been 1-0 at home to against Middlesbrough in April 2002, courtesy of a Darren Bent goal. Bent would subsequently play for Tottenham via Charlton.
Our November defeat was also Ipswich's fourth consecutive win over Spurs, who last managed to beat the Suffolk side (at home) in August 2000. This was Spurs' 400th Premier League defeat. Liam Delap became the third Ipswich player to score in three consecutive Premier League away matches, emulating Chris Kiwomya in 1992 and Claus Thomsen in 1994.
It is amazing to think that our home defeat to Kieran McKenna's Ipswich preceded an incredible 4-0 win away to Man City. That win introduced a period of poor form that was not necessarily injury-related, although we did endure many games without our first choice goalkeeper, defenders and goalscoring players. It doesn't look like any more players will be returning for Spurs this week, but at least Ange has choices available. The squad should be unchanged from last week.
Ipswich's absentees will include the suspended Axel Tuanzebe, who was shown two yellow cards in last week's draw at Villa Park. Goalkeeper Christian Walton, who played in 5 Premier League games between December 30th and January 25th is out. 28-year-old keeper Alex Palmer (signed from West Brom on deadline day) made his Ipswich debut in their 4-1 FA Cup win at Coventry two weeks ago, and last week impressed in his Premier League debut at Villa Park. That was Palmer's first top flight appearance.
Other absentees for Ipswich include full back Wes Burns, forward Conor Chaplin (both knee injuries), and midfielder Chiedozie Ogbene who has been out with an Achilles injury since the Autumn.
Players to look out for include former Man City forward Liam Delap (scorer of 10 EPL goals this season), former Chelsea man Omari Hutchinson, and Sammie Szmodics, who scored the first of Ipswich's goals against us in November. Delap scored their second.
Spurs should be wary. Despite their bottom three position Ipswich have performed well in many games over the course of the season. Unlike us, they do have an FA Cup fifth round game (at Nottingham Forest) to relish.
On 30th December, Ipswich celebrated a first Premier League victory at Portman Road since 2002 thanks to goals from a 21-year-old Chelsea sold last summer (Omari Hutchinson) and another (Liam Delap) whose early career had been moulded by Enzo Maresca. Not since Darren Bent's goal downed Middlesbrough in 2002 had Town enjoyed a top-flight success in Suffolk
Ipswich's 6-0 home defeat to Man City last month equalled their biggest ever home defeat to Liverpool in February 2002.
Brennan Johnson's father David played for Ipswich between November 1997 and January 2001, scoring 55 league goals in 131 games. That period, and his two-year spell with Nottingham Forest, were David's most fruitful with regard to goals scored. David was a late substitute (for goalscorer Alun Armstrong) in a December 2000 game which I remember for all the wrong reasons. Spurs lost 3-0 in a game where Spurs' first shot on target came (from stand-in striker Gary Doherty) after 57 minutes. Former Spur Jamie Clapham came off the bench to score the third goal and to complete our misery.
I am sure Brennan's Dad will be present to (hopefully) see his son play and perhaps start this game. I'd love to see him score and to see Spurs win too!
Tim Robinson referees Spurs for the first time this season, and just the sixth time in total. Mr. Robinson's last Spurs game was our 4-0 defeat at Newcastle in April last year. This is just his 10th Premier League game in the middle this season. This is a 3pm Saturday game and is not being televised here in the UK.
