Spurs to win this one, surely?

Welcome to N17

For the second week in a row, we face a team with a worse 6-game record. Leicester's could not be worse, having lost their last seven league games. The difference between us is marginal, as we've managed one solitary point in our last six Premier League matches.

Despite seeing stats this week such as Spurs having long odds of 50/1 to be relegated and an Opta Analyst figure of there being a 0.08% chance of the drop, I find myself checking the fixtures of the bottom four clubs.

This week, Ipswich visit Liverpool, Wolves host Arsenal, and Southampton are at home to Newcastle. If Spurs can beat Leicester we should extend our lead over the bottom four to 11 points. The trouble is, that is a big "if" considering our form and resources. At least, after their enforced absence from Thursday's Hoffenheim game, Kinsky, and Reguilon can reinforce our wafer-thin squad. Sadly, in his latest press conference, Ange Postecoglou has said that Djed Spence is still sore from a knock in the Everton game and was described as a doubt for tomorrow's game. We can also forget about a possible return for Romero, who is not yet match fit. Pape Sarr and Bissouma remain doubtful and we still have other absentees, including Dominic Solanke who is out for six weeks with a knee injury.

On Sunday 24th November, the day after a 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea, Leicester City ended Steve Cooper's reign as head coach after 157 days in a ruthless move decided by owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha.

5 days later Leicester announced Ruud van Nistelrooy as the new manager, 18 days after completing an interim stint as Manchester United's head coach. Van Nistelrooy had previously coached at PSV.

Leicester won Van Nistelrooy's first game in charge, beating West Ham 3-1. "The Foxes" drew their next game, at home to Brighton, but have since lost seven consecutive Premier League games and are in a worse position than at the time of Van Nistelrooy's appointment. Leicester's only relief was to beat QPR 6-2 in the FA Cup. Leicester fans are not at all happy.

Jamie Vardy reached a record 103 Premier League goals since passing 30 when he scored Leicester's equaliser in this season's away game. He's scored 5 since, but hasn't scored since 8th December.

The Spurs fans were the latest to be on the receiving end of a bit of lighthearted humour from the 38-year-old Leicester City striker as he reminded them of how many titles they have won, closely followed by their defender Cristian Romero. Vardy celebrated his 38th birthday earlier this month.

His antics in our Monday night game in August were reflective of his whole career. He went from non-League to Premier League in two years and to the title four years later, picking up the Golden Boot in the process. His penchant to party and drink only add to his cult status and he hosted the party of all parties when they won the league in 2016.

On 28th November 2015, Vardy became the first player to score in 11 consecutive Premier League games, breaking Ruud van Nistelrooy's record. The previous league game in which Vardy did not score had been another 1-1 draw at The King Power Stadium in which Dele Alli scored his first Spurs goal.

This season's August game was only our sixth draw in 35 Premier League meetings with "The Foxes" and our first since October 2016 at White Hart Lane when Vincent Janssen gave us the lead from the penalty spot just before half-time. Ahmed Musa equalised three minutes after the break.

Vincent Janssen is now in the same Antwerp squad as 35-year-old Toby Alderweireld. The goal against Leicester was Janssen's third Spurs goal (all penalties) and his first in the Premier League. Musa scored his second goal in consecutive games and never scored another Premier League goal. At the time, Spurs were unbeaten in 10 consecutive games, five of which were draws. Both Janssen and Alderweireld scored in last week's 3-2 win over Westerlo, who were missing our loanee Luka Vuskovic through suspension. Alfie Devine was playing.

Our last home game against Leicester was a 6-2 extravaganza in September 2022 when Heung-min Son scored the fourth of his five hat-tricks for Spurs. Spurs were winning 3-2 until Son scored his goals in the last 17 minutes. James Maddison scored one of Leicester's goals. Son had previously been dropped after failing to score for 8 consecutive games.

Both Son and Maddison scored on Thursday. Let's hope they hit the target tomorrow. I am going for a 3-1 home win.

We might see one or both of ex-Spurs Ollie Skipp & Harry Winks. Winks, who was regarded as a prime mover in Leicester's promotion last season, has started 15 Premier League games, while Skipp has started 7 such games. Neither has scored a league goal. Ollie Skipp's one Premier League goal was his cracker for Spurs against Chelsea two years ago.

Rob Jones is our referee for the third time this season. His last game at Tottenham was our Carabao Cup win against Manchester City in October. Mr Jones is 37 and was born on Merseyside. As a result he is never involved in either Liverpool or Everton matches.

Did you know? Jamie Vardy is the only player to have scored a Premier League hat-trick (he's done it twice!) against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. The first was in a 4-2 win over City at The King Power Stadium in December 2016. The second came in an amazing 5-2 away win in September 2020 when James Maddison also scored for Leicester. Former Leicester man Riyad Mahrez scored one of City's goals. A full summary of that game can be read on this page.

During City's run of five consecutive defeats between October 30th and November 23rd, Sporting's Viktor Gykores scored three goals in a 4-1 Champions League win.
