Bottom half beckons for Spurs

Etihad - 03.12.23

Thanks to Eugene Gasper for this picture, taken at last year's game

Would you believe it? Spurs have scored more goals (one) and have a better goal difference than Manchester City. Despite two consecutive Premier League defeats in their run of four losses in all competitions, City remain second, five points ahead of third-placed Chelsea and seven ahead of tenth placed Spurs. We could have been third, if not for the disastrous home defeat to lowly Ipswich.

When Manchester city were beaten 4-1 in the Champions League on November 5th by Sporting (coached by Manchester United's new man Ruben Amorim) it was just the third time that Pep's City had lost three games in a row. Spurs were one of the victors on two occasions:-

1) April 4-10, 2018
- Liverpool (3-0 away, Champions League)
- Manchester United (3-2 home, Premier League)
- Liverpool (2-1 home, Champions League)

2) May 29-August 15, 2021
- Chelsea (1-0, neutral venue, Champions League final)
- Leicester City (1-0, neutral venue, Community Shield)
- Tottenham Hotspur (1-0 away, Premier League)

3) October 30-November 5, 2024
- Tottenham Hotspur (2-1 away, Carabao Cup)
- Bournemouth 2-1 away, Premier League)
- Sporting (4-1 away, Champions League)

That record was beaten two weeks ago when Brighton beat City 2-1 and Guardiola suffered four consecutive defeats for the first time in his managerial career. All four of those games were away.

City hadn't lost four games in a row since 2006. Spurs were one of the teams who beat City in that year, when they lost 6 consecutive games between March 18th and April 15th. West Ham won two of those games, one in the FA Cup. City lost 9 of their last 10 games that season.

City were unbeaten in all games until Spurs knocked them out of this season's league cup.

Can Spurs again win two games in a run of City defeats, or will they suffer in front of the home crowd? City ended that 2021 run with 5-0 home wins against Norwich and Arsenal, so I think we know the most likely result here. I fear the bottom half beckons for "Ange-ball".

Having said that, this game we love does throw up surprises, such as last year's corresponding fixture when we scored first through Son, who then scored an unfortunate own goal equaliser for City. City fielded a strong team that day and took a 3-2 lead before Kulusevski's 90th minute equaliser.

Son Heung-min became only the second player in Premier League history to score a goal and own goal in the opening 10 minutes of a game, after Gareth Barry for Aston Villa v Charlton in May 1999. In the same game, Son scored his 50th Premier League away goal, becoming the first Spurs player to score 50+ home goals, 50+ away goals and provide 50+ assists in the competition.

Part of Pep's problem of late has been a lengthy injury list. Ballon D'Or winner Rodri is out for the season and Kevin De Bruyne hasn't played 90 minutes of any game since mid-September. Fabrizio Romano reported on "X" that Kevin de Bruyne, John Stones, Jack Grealish and Manuel Akanji are all back in training this week.

Rodrigo Bentancur has to serve the first game of a seven (domestic) game ban issued by the FA for a remark made about Heung-min Son in June in a TV interview in Uruguay, which was found to be a racial slur. An appeal has been lodged, but Bentancur will start serving the suspension. The appeal is aimed at reducing the number of games to be missed.

Wilson Odobert's prolonged absence was confirmed last week when it was confirmed he undertook surgery regarding his hamstring injury. Cristian Romero is doubtful for tomorrow's game, as he is "still not 100%" following a foot injury. He has also this week celebrated the birth of a baby daughter. Micky van de Ven is apparently training on grass again, but not likely to feature for another week or two. Richarlison, of course, remains a casualty. All our other players returned intact from international duty. We might see Dragusin and Davies at centre-back tomorrow.

Manchester City won a fourth consecutive Premier League title on the last day of last season. When they beat Spurs 2-0 in their penultimate game of the season, City regained control over Arsenal and only had to match Arsenal's last day result. Both teams won.

It was City's eighth Premier League title (their first was in 2011-12) and their sixth in seven years. City failed in their quest for a third League and Cup Double.

Champions Manchester City had the lowest net spend of any Premier League club in the transfer window - actually turning in a £115.8m profit.

They spent £21.4m on Brazil winger Savinho, but selling players such as forward Julian Alvarez and defenders Joao Cancelo and Taylor Harwood-Bellis (who scored on his England debut last week) made it a profitable window.

City's 28-year-old midfielder Rodri won the Player of the Tournament last summer when Spain won Euro 24.

Phil Foden was named PFA Player of the Year in August. Kyle Walker, Rodri, Foden and Erling Haaland were named in the PFA team of the year.

Manchester City lost their first league game of the season and ended a 32-game unbeaten in the EPL when Bournemouth beat them (for the first time) 2-1 on 2nd November.

In August, Manchester City were fined £2.09 million by the Premier League for 22 instances of delaying the kick-off or restart of matches.

The champions accepted the sanction, which related to rule infringements over the past two seasons, the league confirmed. The issue is unconnected to the 115 charges City are facing for alleged breaches of the competition's financial regulations.

My pessimistic prediction for the game (5.30pm - SKY SPORTS) is a 3-1 defeat for Spurs. Our match referee will be John Brooks.

Did you know? - Bob Dylan (who has been touring the UK very recently, now aged 83) recorded "Blue Moon" and released it on his 1970 double album "Self Portrait" which included a mixture of original, traditional and cover songs. The song was written in 1934 by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart and was also recorded by Elvis Presley in 1954 (released in 1956). In all, over 60 artists have recorded the song.
