Spurs are seeking a hat-trick of hat-tricks!

Welcome to N17

Hat-tricks are certainly the theme here, as Spurs have the chance to achieve such a feat for a third time in as many games. First they beat Manchester United for a third time this season, then by beating Ipswich on Saturday they achieved three back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since December 2023. Now, we have the opportunity to beat Pep Guardiola's Manchester City for a third time this season! As Norman Giller wrote this week, that would complete a second hat-trick of wins this season against a Manchester team!

It is not unusual for us to complete a league double over City. In recent years we achieved the feat in 2021/22 and 2015/16, but you would be hard pushed to find a Spurs triple over this side. While still maintaining inconsistent form, City will be as hard to beat as always. In recent years however, it is rare for Spurs to be playing a City side who are out of Europe while we are still in a European competition.

Spurs' league cup win over City at the end of October was their first defeat in any competition this season. Our 4-0 away league win was City's fifth consecutive defeat in all competitions. That win came in the midst of a 13-match run where City managed just one win in all games.

Thus City lost their fifth consecutive games in all competitions - the longest losing run of Pep Guardiola's managerial career.

The last time City endured a longer losing streak was in March and April 2006, when they were beaten in six successive matches, the fifth of which came versus Spurs.

City also lost three consecutive league fixtures for the first time under Guardiola. It last happened in February to March 2016 during Manuel Pellegrini's reign, and that included a home defeat against Tottenham.

Guardiola has lost seven Premier League games versus Spurs and conceded 26 goals - more than against any other opponent.

Our Premier League victory in November was the first time any City team had lost by a margin of four at their Etihad home, 21 years since they moved into the old Commonwealth Games stadium. The last comparable home defeat was 5-1 to Arsenal at Maine Road in February 2003. Not since Chelsea in 1956 had the reigning league champions lost five in a row in all competitions.

This was just the third time in Premier League history that a team has beaten a reigning champion by four or more goals away from home, after Man Utd 1-6 Man City in 2011 and Leicester 1-6 Tottenham in May 2017. James Maddison scored the earliest ever brace away from home against the reigning champions (20th minute).

City's next game after those five consecutive defeats was at home to Feyenoord in the Champions League. Whilst they didn't lose, they surrendered a 3-0 lead and drew! The last time City conceded two or more goals in six consecutive games was in 1963, and they were relegated!

Spurs beat City away (4-2) and at home in that 62-63 season. City lost their opening game of that season at Molineux 8-1, and their last game at Upton Park 6-1! It took City three seasons to return to the top flight with the great Joe Mercer in charge, assisted by his masterful coach Malcolm Allison.

Now they've won 8 of their last 15 matches, losing 5. Two of those losses were at home and away against Real Madrid in the Champions League round of 16.

Tony Book, who died on January 13 aged 90, was Manchester City's captain and full-back who had previously worked with Malcolm Allison before joining City at the age of 31 (nearly 32). With the Joe Mercer/Allison managerial and coaching leadership and the astute Book on the pitch, City won the league, the FA Cup, European Cup-Winners' Cup and League Cup. It was City's most successful period until the Guardiola era. Tony Book spent some time in the late 90s scouting for Spurs and Sunderland. Book subsequently became manager and honorary president. He is truly a City legend.

Tomorrow's game kicks off at 7.30pm and is being televised by TNT Sports. Erling Haaland sat out Sunday's 2-0 home defeat by hot title favourites Liverpool, but I suspect we will see him tomorrow. City spent big in January with the signings of centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov, defender Vitor Reis, midfielder forward Omar Marmoush and midfielder Nico González, said to be cover for the long term absence of Rodri.

Abdukodir Khusanov joined Manchester City from RC Lens. He signed a four-and-a-half year contract at City until the summer of 2029. Khusanov is the first Uzbek player ever to play in Premier League. Khusanov had a difficult debut against Chelsea, but has settled down. Marmoush's three goals for City all came in their 4-0 win over Newcastle.

Former Spur Kyle Walker won six titles, two FA Cups and a Champions League in 319 games for Manchester City, and sits 22nd on their all-time appearance list. In January he left for A.C. Milan, initially on loan, but probably to stay.

Ben Davies sat out Saturday's game at Ipswich and won't be in tomorrow's squad. Timo Werner is the only one on our injury list (still including Romero, Van de Ven, Dragusin, Richarlison and Solanke) who has a chance to be included in the squad. "Big Ange" does at least have options regarding his team selection. I fancy Spurs to grab a win. There - I've said it!

Referee Jarred Gillett takes charge of his third Spurs game this season, and his eleventh in all. On Sunday, Mr. Gillett had charge of the Newcastle v Nottingham Forest game.

- Goalkeeper Scott Carson, who was 39 on 3rd September, signed a one-year contract with City, taking him to June 2025. Carson's last senior appearance was as substitute in a Champions League game in March 2022. He's been with City since August 2019 now and has made just one Premier League appearance. Carson's senior debut was for Leeds in 2004 and he has since played for Liverpool, Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton, West Brom, Bursapor, Wigan and Derby. Carson was on the bench at Wembley last May and therefore gained an FA Cup runners-up medal. As unused sub, Carson has won two Champions League winners' medals. Once with City in 2003 and previously with Liverpool in 2005!
