Battle of the mid-table giants!

Man Utd v Spurs, 14.01.24

Thanks to Eugene Gasper for his picture

This is only the sixth game of this Premier League season, but defeat for either of these former giants of the domestic game will surely leave the loser floundering in their hope for a top four place. That particular quest is ever-more difficult with Aston Villa, Arsenal and even Brighton hoping to fill the one likely vacancy after Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool. It's a mid-table battle, being shown live on SKY at 4.30pm tomorrow (Sunday).

Erik Ten Hag's side are rarely out of the sports page headlines. Both teams have under-achieved in recent years and so far this season. Spurs dominated possession at Leicester and Newcastle, but lost five precious points in those games. United scraped a late winner at home to Fulham, lost at Brighton and were embarrassed by Liverpool (not for the first time of late).

On Wednesday, United played their opening Europa League game at home to FC Twente and only drew 1-1. In Ten Hag's words,"...We are very ambitious and when you have ambition you have to perform, prove the point and especially today in the second half we were too complacent, we didn't bring it over the line and as a team, you have to bring this...". Former Spur Christian Eriksen went from hero to villain. His mistake led to Twente's equaliser after Eriksen had given United a first half lead. United face difficult trips to Porto next week and to Mourinho's Fenerbahce next month.

Erik Ten Hag's Manchester United beat their City rivals in last season's FA Cup Final to reach 13 FA Cup wins, one behind Arsenal. It was the first time since 1884 and 1885 that the same two teams competed in consecutive finals. One of those two teams was Blackburn Rovers, much admired by the first generation of Spurs players.

Manchester City became the first holders of the men's FA Cup to finish as runners-up in the following campaign since Manchester United in 2004-05.

Lisandro Martinez was an important element in that Cup Final team, having missed 36 games last season. Martinez had started in United's last Premier League game of the season, which was his first start since early February. Ten Hag had to use 15 different central-defensive partnerships during the 23/24 season.

Martinez was considered lucky in some quarters to escape a red card for his two-footed challenge on Palace's Daichi Kamada last week. United had many chances, but under-achieved again in a goalless draw.

On 11th June it was announced that United would hold new contract talks with Ten Hag. There had been considerable speculation regarding his future throughout the season, and even during and after Cup Final day. On 4th July, United confirmed that Ten Hag had a new deal until 2026.

United spent big money in the summer. They signed teenage centre-back Leny Yoro for over £50 million from Lille, but he is out till November with a foot injury sustained in pre-season. Former Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt was signed from Bayern Munich. De Ligt's presence means United have two players from Ten Hag's 2019 Ajax side, beaten dramatically by Spurs in the Champions League semi-final.

Other high-profile signings were 23-year-old striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna (also once of Bayern Munich), Noussair Mazraoui ( a former Ajax right-back) from Bayern Munich and PSG defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

Departures included Anthony Martial at the end of his contract (now with AEK Athens), Donny van de Beek (to Girona), Mason Greenwood (Marseille), Raphael Varane (who went to Como but has since retired), Jadon Sancho (loaned to Chelsea) and Scott McTominay who has signed for Antonio Conte's Napoli.

Manchester United have become the fifth team to have recorded a run of 50 consecutive top-flight seasons. The others are Arsenal (99), Everton (71), and Liverpool (63). Championship Sunderland played in 57 top-flight seasons in a row from 1890 to 1958. Spurs have to wait three years to record 50 consecutive seasons in the top flight, having won promotion after one season in 1977/78. Spurs would otherwise be recording 75 top flight seasons this year. United, like Spurs, spent a solitary season in Division Two in the seventies, but would otherwise be notching up 82 consecutive seasons this year.

Manchester United conceded more goals last season than in any season since 1976-77. Erik ten Hag led them to more defeats in a single season than any United side in Premier League history. By finishing eighth United had their lowest top-flight finish since 1989-90.

When we played (and drew) in January Spurs were seeking to complete a league double over United for the first time since the 1989-90 season under Terry Venables. Spurs set a club record of scoring in 33 consecutive league fixtures. Spurs eventually stretched that run to 39 games, the second longest streak in the Premier League after Arsenal's run of 55 between 2001 and 2002.

Both Manchester teams finished in the bottom half in that 1989-90 season. In the case of United a narrow FA Cup Final replay win over Crystal Palace came to the rescue of Alex Ferguson's United career. United have understandably not reached the heights maintained in Ferguson's reign since the great man retired.

Since beating them twice in the Premier League in 2018 under Mauricio Pochettino (2-0 at home, 3-0 away), Tottenham have only won two of their last 11 games against Manchester United in the competition (D3 L6).

Spurs have gone 1-0 down in 25 of their 32 Premier League games at Old Trafford; the most one side has conceded the first goal away to another in the competition. Last season's game was the first time we avoided defeat having trailed at half time in this exact fixture in the Premier League since October 2005 (1-1), however.

Spurs' skipper Heung-min Son will take a late fitness test after limping off after 70 minutes in the Qarabag game. Postecoglou will welcome Pedro Porro, Romero, Udogie, Maddison and Kulusevski back into his starting line-up, and will be ready to give United a stern test on their own patch. I'm going for a 2-1 away win!

Chris Kavanagh is refereeing his seventeenth Spurs game and already his second such game this season. Mr. Kavanagh is from Ashton-under-Lyme, and has refereed every team in Premier League and Championship.

Did you know? - David De Gea, who last played in the 2023 FA Cup Final for United, has signed on a free transfer and has a one-year contract with Fiorentina.
