Not a happy hunting ground for Spurs recently

St James Park, Newcastle

Thanks to Eugene Gasper for capturing this image

After such a comfortable win against Everton, Sunday's trip to Newcastle (kick-off 1.30pm, and live on SKY) will be our biggest challenge of this young season to date. April's 4-0 defeat followed a 6-1 in the previous year. Newcastle fans might well be rubbing their hands together with glee, relishing the prospect of another embarrassing defeat for Spurs.

Newcastle programmes a few years ago would regularly comment about Spurs having one of the better records at St. James' Park, and indeed we have won 9 of our 29 away games in the Premier League era. Five of those wins have been in the last ten years (plus a 4-0 League Cup win) but Newcastle's three home wins in that period have been by big margins. No-one will forget how we lost 5-1 on the last day of the 2015-16 season and finished "third in a two-horse race".

When we lost 4-0 in last season's away game, Spurs failed to score for the first time in their last 18 visits to St. James' Park in all competitions since March 2005. That was a 1-0 FA Cup quarter-final defeat.

In Newcastle United's 8-0 win at Sheff Utd last September, the Magpies became the first side to have eight different goalscorers in a Premier League match, excluding own goals.

Newcastle went on to beat Sheff Utd 5-1 in the reverse fixture. Their total of 13 goals against the Blades is the most that one team have scored against another in a Premier League campaign.

Newcastle were reluctant sellers, with Eddie Howe a big fan of the player, but the club have been forced to offload Elliot Anderson (to Nottingham Forest for £35 million) and the 19-year-old winger Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion for £32 million in order to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and avoid a points deduction for the new season.

Signings include defender Lloyd Kelly free from Bournemouth, goalkeeper Odysseas (good name!) Vlachodimos from Forest and forward William Osula from Sheffield United.

Former Spur Kieran Trippier will be 34 on 19th September. He has announced his retirement from International football, having earned 54 caps for the senior team. Kieran scored one goal for England, in the 2-1 2018 World Cup semi-final defeat to Croatia. At the time, he was still a Spurs player, and played in our Champions League Final in 2019.

Trippier has seemingly lost his regular place in the Newcastle side to former Southampton player Tino Livramento. "Trips" was being linked with a move to Everton, but he started Wednesday night's Carabao Cup game at Nottingham Forest.

Also involved in the Forest game was Sandro Tonali, who played in just 12 games following his £58 million move from AC Milan before his ten-month suspension for breaking gambling rules. He returned for Newcastle in Wednesday night's match (Newcastle won a penalty shoot-out) and played well (for 62 minutes), so will be in contention for a place in Sunday's team, although full match fitness might remain an issue.

Manchester United's FA Cup win consigned Newcastle to a season without European football, despite finishing seventh, one place above United. In his press conference today (Friday), Eddie Howe has told the club's fans "the dream (of winning the Premier League) is not over, it's just going to take a lot, lot longer".

Despite Newcastle's somewhat enforced restraint in the transfer window, they will offer strong opposition in front of their enthusiastic support. They will be missing defenders Fabian Schar (suspended until after the International break), along with Lascelles and Botman, both of whom have suffered long-term injuries.

Rodrigo Bentancur was given a four-match International ban for his involvement in the disorder that took place at the end of Uruguay's Copa America semi-final against Colombia in July. The ban does not affect club matches, and in his press conference, Ange Postecoglou said: "Rodrigo is all good, he's passed all the protocols we need to, and more importantly he feels really good and the medical team are really comfortable with him being available for Sunday."

Unfortunately, both Dominic Solanke and Richarlison will miss this game. Solanke should be available for the Arsenal game, but "Richie" was injured in training and is out for a few weeks.

I think this will be a highly competitive game, but I do fancy Spurs to win 2-1. Declan Mulcahy will be reporting for Spurs Odyssey and the report may not be posted until late on Monday.

Tommy Cassidy, who died in August this year, aged 73, played for Newcastle between 1970 and 1980. Known for his intelligent midfield play and a legendary goal against Sunderland (on New Year's Day 1980), Cassidy was a Northern Ireland international who roomed with George Best on occasions. Cassidy made 239 appearances for Newcastle before dropping to third division Burnley.

Tommy Cassidy, who made poignant visits to the Memory Cafe at Newcastle United, attended by fans suffering from dementia, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease.

Did you know?

1. 20 years ago on August 21st Thimothee Atouba scored THAT goal in a 1-0 win for Spurs!

2. Nolberto (Nobby) Solano, who made 315 appearances for Newcastle in two spells between 1998 and 2007, was managing Northern Premier League side Blyth Spartans until he was sacked this week after six winless games

3. Eddie Howe is winless as manager in each of the last ten Premier League meetings between Bournemouth and Newcastle United, five with each team, Bournemouth earlier and now Newcastle.

4. Anthony Gordon played just two minutes of one Euro 24 game for England in their disappointing 0-0 draw against Slovenia.

Rob Jones is firmly established on the Premier League list now and this will be the eighth time we've seen him in the middle. Mr. Jones was fourth official at our Leicester game, and refereed our first game at Brentford last season. He is kept quite busy in Europe and on Thursday night was in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, refereeing a Europa Conference League game.
