Can Spurs give us a Happy New Year?
Welcome to January 2025, which offers us 8 more games in a packed programme featuring four Premier League matches, plus games in both domestic cup competitions and the final two matches of the Europa League group phase. Spurs have already played 28 competitive games this season and have paid a penalty in terms of numerous injuries and absences, which have no doubt affected our performances and results to date.
Understandably, the morale amongst fans has not been good, and that certainly was not helped by Rodrigo Bentancur's totally irresponsible added time booking last week which gives him an eighth game off through suspension. If it was my decision, I'd have given him a club fine for his total lack of discipline. No doubt Pape Sarr will start tomorrow's game (12.30 - TNT) beside Yves Bissouma. I understand that Destiny Udogie will be out for weeks rather than days, so Djed Spence will replace him tomorrow. We must hope that our first choice centre-backs can return asap. Romero, Romero, wherefore art thou Romero?
Fifth-placed Newcastle come to Tottenham at the top of their form after four successive wins without even conceding a goal. Their victims have been Leicester and Ipswich (both 4-0) and Aston Villa (3-0) followed by Manchester United (2-0). Their win over hapless United at Old Trafford was their first there for 11 years, and only their second such win in 52 years. That's almost as long since they last won a trophy!
Alexander Isak is chasing Mo Salah (17) and Erling Haaland (14) with 12 Premier League goals, eight of which have been scored in Newcastle's last six games. Isak has scored in each of those six games, scoring a hat-trick at Ipswich. Newcastle have scored 31 goals with Isak on the field, and just two without him. Isak has played in 17 of Newcastle's 19 games.
Newcastle will be without Fabian Schar who picked up his fifth booking in last week's game at Old Trafford. That does give Newcastle problems at the back with goalkeeper Pope, plus Botman, Krafth and Lascelles absent, but that recent run has been achieved without those players anyway. Striker Callum Wilson hasn't played since early last month, and he's aggravated a hamstring injury. Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon have been in top form as part of a front three, supported by Guimaraes, Tonali and Joelinton.
Both teams have tough Carabao Cup semi-finals coming up in midweek (Newcastle play Arsenal away on Tuesday night), so this early kick-off helps regarding recuperation. All the focus is on tomorrow's game.
Spurs have now won just one of the last five league meetings with Newcastle. That was last season's home game played in December 2023. Eddie Howe's side was said to be decimated and "running on fumes". Destiny Udogie scored his first Spurs goal; Richarlison scored twice and "Sonny" scored from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Dubravka. That was our first penalty goal of the season. Jamie Donley (then 18) made a late appearance for his club debut.
Part of our problem tomorrow is the likely absence of Udogie and Richarlison and the dip in form of our captain. More pace might be advantageous against right-back Livramento, but of course Werner hasn't got the guile of Son. I'd give "Sonny" a break and play Timo, much as that thought will irk most Spurs supporters.
Our away defeat in September, was at least by the most slender margin after two successive heavy losses in the North-East, but it was a miserable day for Spurs fans who watched their team dominate in terms of possession and shots on goal, only to see us suffer two sucker punch goals.
Spurs are yet to win a league match this season when they have not scored three goals or more. Despite scoring the second-most in the league (41), they have also conceded the eighth most (28). I don't have the confidence in my team to publicly predict a win, but live in hope. I do sincerely wish all readers a happy new year!
New England head coach Thomas Tuchel is set to watch this game and will be watching Dominic Solanke, James Maddison (if selected) on the Spurs side, while Livramento, Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon will be seeking to attract Tuchel's attention on the visiting side.
Did you know? - There has not been a 0-0 result in meetings between these two teams since 18th August, 1971. Bill Nicholson and Joe Harvey were the respective managers. Harvey was the manager of Newcastle's last trophy-winning side when they won the invitational Inter-City Fairs Cup in 1969. Their last real trophy was the 1955 FA Cup. Joe Kinnear, who later managed Newcastle, was at right back for Spurs in 1971. Joe passed away, aged 77, last April. The respective number 9s were Martin Chivers and Malcolm MacDonald.
Andy Madley is our match referee for the eighth time. This is his second Spurs game of the season, having previously overseen our 4-1 win over West Ham. A similar scoreline would be very welcome!
