Vultures will be gathering over St. Mary's

Southampton - 18.03.23

Thanks to Andy Park for this picture

Vultures (of the media variety) and not seagulls will be gathering over Southampton's St Mary's Stadium for this Sunday night game, being televised by TNT Sports and kicking off at 7pm. The travelling fans and the routine of working people are the last considerations of the TV moguls who control our football-viewing lives.

Spurs have always been a team where the press will happily gloat over bad times, and they've been loving Postecoglou's Thursday night criticism (he calls it "assessment") of Timo Werner. With 9 players missing, including the suspended Bentancur and Bissouma, Big Ange will largely have to rely upon the same squad he took to Glasgow, although he can include Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon in tomorrow's squad. Neither was registered for Europe. Spence has (mysteriously) played just 65 Premier League minutes in 4 substitute appearances. We've seen nothing of Reguilon whatsoever. He is seemingly just seeing out his contract which expires next June.

With Liverpool looming in next week's Premier League game, this is a "must win" for Spurs. The same applies to "The Saints" for different reasons. Win, lose or draw, Russell Martin's team will still be bottom of the league. They also face Liverpool in their next game, which is a League Cup quarter-final. If they lose against Spurs, the relegation death knell will surely be sounding.

Southampton's 22/23 relegation was confirmed with a 2-0 home defeat by Fulham on May 13th 2023 with two games remaining. It was the end of an eleven year stay in the top flight.

The 22/23 season was one in which "The Saints" had three managers - Ralf Hasenhuttl, Nathan Jones and Ruben Selles.

Our last game against Southampton (a 3-3 draw in March 2023) was followed by Antonio Conte's famous rant about Spurs. It was his last game in charge. Some of those press vultures have made reference to that Conte press conference in previews for this game.

Southampton returned to the Premier League at the first time of asking but had to do it through the play-offs. Despite finishing in fourth place, three points behind fellow-finalists Leeds, who included Spurs loanee Joe Rodon, Southampton won 1-0, thanks to Adam Armstrong's 24th minute goal.

Armstrong (aged 27) had scored in "The Saints'" last 2023 Premier League game when they drew 4-4 with Liverpool, and amassed 21 Championship goals last season together with three more goals in the Play-off semi-final and Final.

Last season was the 38th Play-off season. At all levels, 105 clubs have taken part in at least one play-off campaign. 21 of these teams are no longer in the Football League.

Spurs, and four of the five other ever-present Premier League members (Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester United) have never been involved in play-offs. Chelsea are the exception, having been relegated in 1988 after finishing 18th in Division One, before losing 2-1 on aggregate to Division Two Middlesbrough. Chelsea became the first and only club to be relegated from the top tier in the play-offs. Division One clubs were only involved in 1986-87 and 1987-88. Middlesbrough had finished third in Division Two.

Russell Martin (once a Norwich City stalwart) was appointed Southampton's manager in June 2023, having previously managed MK Dons and Swansea.

Former Spur Kyle Walker-Peters made 43 Championship appearances and played in all three play-off games for "The Saints".

For the first time in their history, Southampton were promoted back to the top flight in the season following relegation. This is their 25th Premier League season. Matt Le Tissier remains the club's highest scorer at this level, whilst West Ham's James Ward-Prowse tops Southampton's Premier League appearance charts with 343 games. Ward-Prowse played in "The Saints'" first Championship game last season before his move to West Ham. He's now on loan at Nottingham Forest.

This is Southampton's 47th season of top flight football (Spurs are in their 91st such season), having first reached that level with manager Ted Bates in 1966. Martin Chivers was among the Southampton squad in that season. Spurs achieved a league double in that season winning 5-3 at home (Mullery, Jones(2), Mackay, Greaves pen) and 1-0 at The Dell (Gilzean).

Son Heung-min has scored more goals against Southampton (12) than he has for Spurs against any other team. Four of those goals came in the 5-2 away win in September 2020.

Southampton's Premier League campaign was not helped by a three-match suspension for defender Jack Stephens after his foul on Manchester United's Garnacho in September. Stephens was suspended for an additional two games by the FA because of vile personal abuse towards referee Stuart Attwell when sent off. Stephens did not return until 26th October when "The Saints" lost 1-0 at The Etihad. Stephens has now been suspended for an additional 4 games after seeing red again for pulling the hair of Chelsea's Marc Cucurella on 4th December.

Fraser Forster will be playing against his old team, having made 134 EPL appearances between 2014 and 2022 before signing for Spurs. Fraser played in that March 2023 3-3 draw.

Jan Bednarek, Paul Onuachu and Adam Lallana are all back available for Southampton. Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is also fit, while fellow keeper Aaron Ramsdale (signed from Arsenal) is 'very close' after a finger injury. However, Saints remain without longer-term absentees Gavin Bazunu, Ross Stewart, Juan Larios and Will Smallbone.

Spurs' only win in their last five league games was the amazing 4-0 away to Man City. We've managed to lose at home to bottom three club Ipswich. In October we lost to struggling Crystal Palace. Who's to say we won't gift Southampton only their second league win of the season? I'll be foolhardy and predict a 3-1 away win!

Darren England referees Spurs for the seventh time in all and the third time this season. His previous appointments this term were Coventry away and Ipswich at home. Let's hope for a good performance tomorrow!

Did you know? - Former Southampton FC chairman and banker Rupert Lowe, who was elected to represent the Reform Party in Great Yarmouth, previously represented UKIP as an MEP. Lowe has pledged to give all his monthly salary to Great Yarmouth charities.
